What distribution are you using? I have an old (2004) XP-Pro box that I have retired due to old age, and have been thinking about giving linux a try just for fun. (Other than that boat anchor, we are a Microsoft free house.)

    Thanks!

Linux Mint 18.2? I think there is a 18.3 now.

    Another vote for https://www.startpage.com/

You get the same results that you get with google through them but they don't track or record where you go.

Opera with its built in ad blocker turned on. Firefox when I get to occasional sites that won't work with Opera. DuckDuckGo now for searches. So far I have found any and everything I wanted to find on DDG, including really great collections of "images" which makes me happy because I used to use Google images about as much as anything else.

NOW FOLKS: How about we all practice telling people to "quack it" instead of to Google it!!!!!!

I have used youtube for gun info ie reviews, how to reload, etc. It was helpful, but I'll be avoiding it at all costs. Other than that, I use nothing google and haven't for years. I guess Hickock 45's youtube days are over, bummer. Use duckduckgo as your search engine. I've been using it for years and it works great. They say they don't track you either but in the world of the internet I doubt the validity of those claims, but I still prefer it as my search engine over anything google or microsoft.

Not over yet, the new policy explicitly permits gun reviews. But while not over, the days may be numbered.

But I am concerned reloading videos may be gone with the new policy, as will firearms assembly tutorials. Not sure where gun cleaning will fit in.

duckduckgo is good. But it lacks certain things (that I am not aware of right now) that google has. For example: typ in Fed Ex tracking in both. Duckduckgo gives you the results. Which is what you expect. Google will provide a field to you can type in the tracking number.

Just a convenience for sure. But a time saver if looking up multiple orders with Fedex, UPS, USPS at the same time

At the expense of being tracked.

Some might think of that as a convenience. Thankfully, there are alternatives to Google. (Fewer every day, given the scope of apps they've corralled, but still.)

If you are worried about tracking then look into a browser vpn like browsec that I use for Firefox. There are a lot of them out there depending on your browser butshort of paying for a vpn service it works really well.

Our IT director at work recently locked down our network and several sites that I use for parts ordering. He came by to inform me and get a list of sites for him to whitelist but I was still able to get to everything he had blocked for everyone. He was puzzled for about a week before I told him that I was using browsec and bypassing the firewall.

Download the Browsec add on for Firefox and it will keep your ISP from tracking what you do.

Load the TOR browser and duckduckgo.com comes as the default search engine.
Definitely cleaner than any other browser I've found to date.
