He certainly doesn't seem to agree that getting out of the way will help the county's citizens to get back to normal. Seems to prefer his role, instead of what's best for the citizens. (Of course, that presupposes it'd be better for the citizens to get this sorry chapter behind them.)

Hopefully, it's all being done 'by the book.'

His responses are what seemed to ramp things up more than anything. If that's truly how he feels he needs to go.

One can hope, but I'm not holding my breath, not until it's reported in the more mainline news services.

Why give him so many weeks notice? Do what a lot of other places do: Send in 2 top law enforcement people (Feds preferred in this case) and give him 5 minutes to clean out his desk, strip him of badge and gun and keys to the building and cars and escort him out. That would be proper.

Maybe OV is correct - http://Sheriff Israel to be removed

Scott Israel's attorney denies report Broward sheriff will be removed from office...

Attorney Stuart Kaplan went on a WFTL-850 morning show to address an unconfirmed report by right-wing blogger Laura Loomer, who claimed that Gov. Rick Scott would remove Israel from office when the FDLE report is released.

Unless Florida law is *much* different than other states', there's nobody who can summarily remove the sheriff from office. Not the Governor, not the Fed. He's an elected official; under normal circumstances, the Florida or Federal DOJ could arrest him for criminal acts, but he'd still be the sheriff unless they managed to convict him of some crime specifically related to the office he holds. That'd almost always be either fraud or financial malfeasance. However despicable his actions wrt Parkland, he has committed no crime under current law; the Supreme Court ruled "no duty to protect" long ago.

The normal and proper course would be to call a special election and let the voters get rid of him, but such things are intensely political to organize, and Israel has plenty of protection in Tallahasse, and probably in DC as well. Chances of a special election are slim.

What's going to be interesting is if he gets a bunch of Bloomberg or Soros money to finance his re-election run. If they were going to hang him out to dry, they would have done it months ago. He's walking tall because he's a "made man" in the old Sicilian sense.

He's riding a four-year term; he'll be up for re-election in 2020. It will be interesting to see how Google and Bing shape search results when people try to look up events in the dim past of 2018...

    He can. And has.

    http://www.tbo.com/florida-politics/...oward-sheriff/

    From the article.

"Under the Florida Constitution, the governor has the power to suspend any Florida official not subject to impeachment. Once suspended, the state Senate may permanently remove an official from office — or reinstate him or her.
The governor can suspend officials for "malfeasance, misfeasance, neglect of duty, drunkenness, incompetence, permanent inability to perform official duties, or commission of a felony." In his two terms, Scott has suspended officials from nearly every level of local government. (The governor has also suspended dozens of notaries public.) In the vast majority of cases, suspended officials have been accused of crimes.
Just five of Scott's 40 suspensions cited non-criminal reasons like malfeasance or neglect of duty as the primary justification for the action. Just two of those cases involved officials accused of no criminal activities whatsoever."

I don't expect any action--if there is to be any--until after the October elections. With Scott running for US Senate, I doubt he'd want to bring up a controversial move such as suspending the sheriff. After the elections, win or lose, Scott would be free to do whatever he likes.
