" The "non-replaceable" cutter on my vintage Herter's case trimmer has finally worn down. Instead of trimming brass, it wears it off. I had it sharpened once, but it was only marginally better.

So I ordered a Hornady case trimmer and necessary shell holders today. Didn't really want to spend the money, but the old Herter's is toast. "

" Ran fifty 80-grain SPBTs loaded with BLC2 powder through the Goose today. 100% function! BLC2 is noticeably dirtier than the H335 I've used but has lower pressures, more bulk. I have a new scope on the way, a 4x12, and hopefully that will help tighten up the groups. Getting a cataract repaired wouldn't hurt either.

I don't know if it was the heat (high 80s) or that I arrived a bit later than usual, but the range was nearly empty, only 3-4 others on the rifle range. Even the pistol range was unusually quiet. Kind of nice actually. "

OldVet replied to the thread The Goose gets an upgrade..
" Eureka!

The new Aero Precision lower build resolved all of the Mongoose feeding problems. I had two separate first-feed rounds that did not quite go into battery, but I was shooting 80-grain SPBT "seconds," some of which had battered/slightly bent lead tips. I suspect that may have been the issue, and they both occurred with the 5-round mags. The 10-round mag ran without a hitch.

I shot loads of H335 powder from 24.0 up to 26.0 grains. I knew I needed some scope adjustment, so I started at 50 yards and made a couple adjustments to bring the groups to center - 1 inch low. The load of 24.5 grains made one ragged group, the others not too bad, but I take credit for the more open groups.

Moving out to 100 yards, I made one click adjustment right and let it ride. Shooting off a Harris bipod, the groups opened up a bit naturally, but they were right on in elevation and the one click right may need to be backed out. I'm letting that setting ride for the present.

Recoil was mild, and the primers looked good--no cratering, no flattening--with only the 26.0 loads showing the barest bolt face imprint on the primers. I think it is safe to bump the powder up another grain or so.

So it took a new lower to straighten out the Goose kinks, something I intended to do all along. The A2 stock I installed feels much better than the carbine stock I previously used. My eye aligns with the scope much better. I am finally a happy camper with the Mongoose. "

Little side story on the chili powder treatment: Years ago I had a beagle that would dig a golf ball hole in the yard every day! 4-5 inches wide, about 6-8 inches deep. I tried filling the holes with the dog's poop, etc., but it just either dug it out or dug a new one.

Someone told me about mixing hot chili powder in with the dirt and filling the hole, so I did. The dog ATE the dirt! The dog pooped dirt piles.

Moral of the story--beagles are really stupid. "

" I'm looking into replacing the old 4X scope I'm using on my Mongoose AR with something of a higher power. I have limitations: the longest range available is 200 yards, hiking 100 yards on these knees is a pain (Hoping to get them replaced in Nov.), and I'm a cheapskate.

Because the Mongoose is essentially a paper-punching range toy only, I'm looking at something in the 4x12 or 4x16 range. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, just useable. BDCs don't make me all giddy, giant "tactical" knobs don't interest me, and a 3x9 Bushnell has always done the job out to 300+ yards for me.

I've looked into Vortex, Primary Arms, Nikon, and a few others. I seriously doubt I'll invest more than $300, so don't say, "Get this $2000 scope!"

So what suggestions/experiences might some of you have in that range that may serve my purposes? "

OldVet created the thread Is NASCAR Dead?.
" If not dead, it sure seems to be dying on the vine. I don't watch it like I used to, but I pop in and out and notice how the cameras avoid showing the stands, and when they do--they are far, far from being full. The attendance at the race in TX today was, well, miserable.

There is a cornucopia of reasons it is failing. The expense, the "Stages," the orchestrated yellow flags, turning its nose up at its roots, etc. NASCAR needs to give up entertaining and get back to racing. Smaller tracks are exciting, dirt tracks would be better. "

I am not surprised one iota by this. In fact, I always assumed the rich an famous did this kind of thing. Did anyone think those kids were that smart?

What I do find amazing is that federal government agencies are spending time and money investigating how the elite manage to get their babies into top-tier colleges and universities. I guess they ran out of bigger fish to fry. "

OldVet created the thread Youtube/internet brake fix....
" Long story short, I noticed my wife's Kia brake pedal had gotten spongy and would sink to the floor under pressure. Master cylinder bypassing, right?

Wrong. New one didn't help a bit. No leaks. Bleeding, etc., nothing changed.

So I did some internet searching on the issue and ran across several posts with similar undiagnosed cause, which turned out to be the ABS control module. A quick check showed a new module was $1300 for the part! That ain't happening. Found a few "used" ones for under $200, but that's a crap shoot if you get a good one.

So I ran across a few forums and one guy with the identical problem, haven changed the master cylinder, had calipers replaced, and the ABS module, and still had the problem. So the "advisor" on the forum suggested finding a sandy road, driving about 25-30 mph and locking up the brakes several times and see if that doesn't clear it. Well, the guy with the problem never came back with a response.

So this morning I drove the Kia out to a sandy road and slammed on the brakes 8-10 times to activate the ABS. It made several warning lights pop on and off in the process, but lo and behold, it fixed the spongy, sinking brake pedal. The ABS pump is very noisy in a Kia, by the way. Definitely know when it activates.

Apparently the solenoid valves in the ABS module can get hung up or air in them and cause mushy brake pedals. So if your brake pedal seems to have gotten a bit mushy or sinking under sustained pressure, before rushing to the brake shop, find a sandy or gravel road and lock the brakes a few times and see if that helps. "

OldVet created the thread The Goose gets an upgrade..
" Well, the AR lower receiver did anyhow. I installed a LaRue MBT-2S trigger. It's supposed to be a "two-stage" trigger, but I don't see any difference. But for sure, it is lighter and a cleaner break than the OEM mil-spec trigger. It's supposed to break at 4.5 pounds, but I can judge that with only my finger.

I'm no gunsmith, but it took all of thirty minutes to swap it out, and much of that was my cleaning the receiver nooks and crannies, lubing the sear points and pins, etc. While I haven't made it back to the range yet, the functional tests showed it to be a big improvement.

If anyone is interested in an inexpensive AR upgrade and can't drop $200-300 for a match trigger, LaRue has them on sale for about $95 shipped. It comes complete with new pins and a heavier hammer spring (6 lb?) for those who prefer a bit heavier trigger. "

OldVet created the thread The Mongoose is just broken..
" I've had the Goose out to the range a couple times now. The first trip was primarily to fireform cases with lighter loads I was forewarned may not cycle the action. They didn't.

For the second trip, I loaded some "working" loads as well as some more fireforming loads with boosted powder loads. Still none of the fire-forming loads cycled--either not ejecting the empty case or not picking up the next round when it did eject. To make matter worse, none of the working loads cycled either. Halfway through the session, I gave up in frustration. All this happened with three different magazines. It is, IMO, short-stroking.

Chambering was fine when it fed by hand. I'm using my 5.56 Armalite lower and BCG that work 100% with the .5.56 upper. Shouldn't be an issue there.

I emailed the fellow who made produced the barrel, told him what it was doing, and asked for suggestion. He said my fireforming loads are still too light, but the working loads should have cycled. He asked a few questions and made a few suggestion. Everything checked out. He then asked me to measure the gas port size.

I dug through drill bits and whatnot, looking for something to measure the hole. I informed him a pin punch measuring .089 wanted to enter the port but would not. He said it seemed undersized slightly (He doesn't make the gas ports, only reams the chamber and cuts/threads the blanks), and for a 22" rifle-length barrel, it need to be .091-.093. He said to try a 3/16 (.093) drill bit to enlarge the hole. My research into AR gas port sizes seemed to agree.

He also said if that didn't resolve the issue to ship the upper to him and he'd get it working at no charge. He also emailed some loads for my bullets his ballistics program spit out, which are close to what I have loaded.

I'm hoping to get back to the range either Monday or Thursday to see if this resolves the issue. Fingers crossed. "

OldVet created the thread Confess something personal defense related....
" They claim confession is good for the soul. Well, although some have claimed I don't have one, here goes.

I've never been one for continued SD training. First off, I don't like people looking over my shoulder to evaluate me. Never have. Two, I never had the money and/or time to partake in advanced firearm training outside of the meager training the military provided. While I haven't exactly poo-pooed advanced/continued training, I haven't particularly endorsed it either.

As things go, I took an opportunity to meet up with a forum member from another forum who was coming to a nearby range to have an "informal discussion of self defense." My primary goal was simply to meet the guy, and anything else was just gravy. The informal discussion turned into a class on point shooting and discussions for which I was totally unprepared. And by unprepared, I mean I brought my Glock 30, a couple of full mags, and a box of reloads, as well as my 6906 and a couple of loaded mags.

Long story short, I took a class on point shooting for as long as my ammo lasted (which ironically matched how long my back and knees lasted) and had my eyes opened wide on the effectiveness of point shooting and close-up self defense. I could have gone to my back up gun, but my back and knees were shot, so I pulled up a chair and played mental sponge for the rest of the impromptu sessions. I found my forum member to be an excellent instructor whose teachings came from experience, not a preestablished lesson plan. He explained his reasoning for everything he presented. No "because I say so" instructions. All logic, reasoning, and forethought.

I'm sure many of us cannot afford the time and money it takes to enroll in continued firearm training, and that's okay. But for those who can manage to come up with the money and time but have been sitting on the fence about it, OV says it will be worth that time and money. It's good stuff.

So what would you fellow forum members care to confess to, as far as personal defense goes? "

OldVet created the thread The Mongoose is broken in--sort of..
" I finally made it out to fireform my newly made 6mm Mongoose cases. What a PITA! As I was warned, the low load of 27 grains of H335 did not have enough oomph to cycle the AR action even once. Each round had to be cycled by hand. To add to that, the case catcher I tried would stuff a case in the action as I cycled them. I used a case catcher because I didn't want to chase my handmade cases across the shooting line and have people step on them. Need to work on that case catcher.

I'm using my Armalite AR lower and the trigger is NOT much for precision work, and I didn't expect much in that area either. I slapped on an old Bushnell Sportview 4X scope I had lying around and went for it. As expected, I chased holes in the target with the sights for a while, but I didn't care as the purpose of the session was fireforming cases, not accuracy or sighting in. I did end up getting marginally respectable groups at the end. The marginal part can mostly be blamed on me.

I really hate the collapsible stock on the lower. Somewhere down the road I plan on building a lower with an A1 stock and installing a good trigger. The milspec one will never work to the extent I want with the Mongoose.

.223 case on top, (badly) formed Mongoose case before fireforming in center, Fireformed Mongoose on bottom.
Attachment 19876

Hard to tell much difference with the lousy pics, but the Mongoose is slightly shorter but wider in case width and the shoulder is changed from 30 to 40 degrees.

I didn't post any target pics because they weren't worthy of any bragging rights and Tangle would have eaten my lunch! It's going to be a long process in getting this rifle to where I want, but I've got nothing but time on my hands. And with that, tomorrow I'll start working on some real loads. Hopefully they'll cycle the danged action! "

OldVet created the thread Stone's arrest....
" I've let the media hoopla run its course and pondered the event of Stone's arrest for a couple days now.

Just who did the FBI think they were arresting, some violent cartel leader from Columbia? Some deep, dark inner Miami gang lord? No...turn out it was just some old guy that probably has too much money and influence.

So FBI SWAT appears with cameras rolling, heavily armed and geared up for a firefight. What happened to knocking on the door and informing said individual they have a warrant for his arrest and to kindly come with them.

It is apparent to me the fears of the jacked-booted federal law enforcement agencies have come to fruition. If any of you think there can't be a raid on your house at o'dark-thirty to arrest you and seize all of your "weapons," you might want to ponder this recent event a bit also.

Dominoes. We're all dominoes all lined up, waiting for the first one to be tipped over. "

OldVet created the thread Stop Smoking Now!.
" I learned today that a former AF coworker and hunting/fishing/camping buddy of mine has passed away. He was a couple years older than me and a chain smoker forever. I knew he had developed Parkinson's but apparently he developed COPD also, which is what finally got him. We had kept in touch through our Christmas letters over the years but hadn't actually seen each other in many years due to being in distant places after both of us retired.

I know a few people with COPD, and what they all have in common is smoking. Their lives are miserable, to say the least, and the condition robs them of enjoying themselves in their golden years. Any of you forum members who smoke, I ask you to stop it now, if not for your own health, at least do it for your family. Once the lungs go, you're all but helpless to enjoy life. "

OldVet created the thread Contacting state Reps..
" I understand that elected officials rarely read a citizen's email, unless it's from a major campaign contributor, but hopefully their staffs keep a log of the number of pro- and con- opinions on the various bills. So in that thought I submitted the following to my state senator and representative on guns bills submitted so far:

I wish to express my utmost desire that you oppose the following bills: SB 364 Prohibited Placed for Weapons and Firearms, HB 135 Transfer of Firearms, and HB 197 Concealed Weapons.

All of these bills will do nothing to protect the public, in fact making them all the more defenseless, and will have no effect whatsoever on the criminal on the street. This chipping away of the Second Amendment cannot be allowed at either the state or federal level.

Conversely, I highly encourage you to support the following bills: HB 175 Firearms, and HB 6007 License to Carry Concealed Weapons or Firearms.

Both of these bills support the constitutional right the keep and bear arms as well as the right of one to defend one's self. They also will reverse the unconstitutional travesty enacted by the previous legislature and governor.

Sincerely,
OldVet

HB 175 would revoke the state bump-stock ban, restore the rights of 18-20-year-old adults to purchase firearms, and all else in the travesty passed by the last legislature and governor following the Parkland school shooting.

HB 6007 would allow campus carry for licensed persons.

It may be a waste of time, but without face-to-face opportunities to present one's views, there are limited methods of expressing one's desires. "
