Let the schools set aside some entrance slots and auction them off to rich people. But, for accreditation's sake, let those kids flunk out if they can't hack it. Otherwise, it degrades the value of the degree. Of course, that won't get done in this society that says in public that no one is to have special privileges.
Just like qualifying for the Boston or New York Marathons You need a qualifying time in an accredited/certified race. Now, if you are wondering why you see people in the Boston and NY Marathons that take 6 hours to complete, it is because they have slots set aside for people that donate money, people that pay a tour group, and for celebrities

Best analogy I can think of.

Yes, I know the argument people have told me in the past: it is such a small inconvenience for what the NRA actually does for us.

My response is this: would you accept any other company sending you stuff unsolicited when you have repeatedly told them over YEARS to stop?

And I doubt if I was still sending them money that they would have changed their stance on bump stocks, Red Flag Laws and NICS which ARE important to me. So if they are not doing what is important to me, they do not get my money. "

The pedophile should be sentenced to jail for life with a possibility for parole. The rationale behind that is that they would only be released if deemed not a threat anymore. Currently, it does not work like that. And the way I understand it, the released pedophile now is not always "tracked" anyway. They are restricted where they can live and associate with. And they should be allowed the RTKBA's.

Reimbursement for damages is a civil matter more so than a punitive action or criminal punishment.

The example of securities fraud and being barred from practicing again had more so to do with licensing requirements than a criminal judgment.

Setting all of that aside, there is a world of difference barring someone from choosing how they can protect their lives, the lives of their families, and their property vs regulatory and licensing requirements to hold a job or limiting civil damages in a settlement resulting from criminal action.

It is not even the same topic. "

So, back to this sub-3hr marathon you're planning. What's the plan so far, if you're willing to divulge? The Kipchoge official barn-burner training plan, or something else?
Pretty simple. In a nutshell

Phase 1 (xx-Jun 15th) Build miles and extend my weekly mileage 45-52 miles a week)
-One long run of 12-18 miles a week, a ten miler, and 6-9 milers mixed in.
-Just a little bit of speed work and hills, more so to mix it up than to really do anything

Phase (2 June 16th to July 20th or so) Chill out, rest, reduce miles but still do long run
- One long run a week 12-18 mile, 6-8 milers, no speed work or hills.
-Take 1 week off and just relax

Phase 3 (July 20th to 18 Aug) same as Phase 1, but build miles to 50-70 weekly

Phase 4 (19 Aug to Marathon dates in Dec and Jan)

- a mix of speedwork once a week, tempo runs 3 times a week, hills once a week and long run 12 to 22 miles a week.

I am amazed at the training plans that the elites do. 100-150 miles a week is just plain crazy! I plan on doing a 70 mile week only once. the rest is under 65 "

I used to always have my long distance shoes with 7-11 mm heel drop. I found out 2 years ago I like the 4 mm drop. Definitely not for everyone. You need to have an efficient running style, neutral stability, and not a heavy heel striker.

It does not make one faster, it just makes for a better run if it fits your style. "

We had a typical dozen likely run routes we'd take, depending on how we all felt. I tended to do something like this: Mon = 3-5mi hard, morning; 5-7mi slower evening; Tue = weights, morning; lighter 5-10mi run, evening; Wed = hard 7mi hill route, either morning or evening; Thu = weights, mornings; long/slow, morning; speed run <5mi, evening; Fri = modest 3-5mi, morning; modest 4-8mi, evening; Sat = 10K or Half-Marathon "race", morning; weights, evening; Sun = long/slow, afternoon or early evening. Plus ~100+ mi/week cycling; plus the occasional soccer game, tennis match, etc. When needed, the occasional rest day doing very little, but that might be only two or three times in a month. (Yeah ... young and foolish, back then.) No wonder we never did marathons. No time!

Could have cut a third of the running out, half the cycling, and probably boosted strength for harder and tougher run routes, had we had better coaching or improved knowledge of kinesiology. I suspect it would have paid dividends in the sub-half distances we typically did. Might have squeezed another 5% out of my times. Ah, well. In the next life, maybe.
There was an article in Runner's World this month about what it was like running 30 years ago. When I was running cross country and doing 10K and half marathons, no one took nutrition with them on long runs.

Sports science/medicine/research has grown greatly.

And it does make a big difference taking in a gel shot or 10 oz of Gatorade in the middle of a long run, especially if it is hot and humid. I did my 14 miler on Sunday and the dew point was ridiculously high. I started bonking at 10 miles. I just walked for 2-5 minutes and sucked down 10 oz of Gatorade and had a gel shot, I knocked out the last four fresh as a daisy Lots of that is mental, but ya can't disregard the intake of fluids. And honestly, it was the gel shot I took 30 minutes prior to that kicked in.

Problems Runners Today Will Never Have to Worry About

-When people thought it was acceptable—healthy even!— to run with ankle weights. Turns out strapping an unnatural amount of weight around a crucial joint is uncomfortable and just plain dangerous.

-When a BQ was 2:50 and nobody whined about it.

-Hoping that your race photos turned out ok. You picked them out from a 2”x 2” thumbnail of the photo and weren’t really sure if it you looked good.

-The mental math you’d have to do midrun to estimate your exact pace based on landmarks and time.

-Gatorade. Nothing but Gatorade.

-Being totally exhausted after a race—and having to navigate crowds of people to try to find your family or friends because cell phones weren't a thing.

-Driving a route the night before to get the official distance, because your watch only told you how long you ran, not how far.

-Running in a 100% cotton outfit. Oh, the chafing...

-When experts thought you shouldn’t fuel or hydrate during races—and you finished totally cracked and crawling.

-Carrying your route directions on a piece of paper that just got progressively more sweaty and crumpled.

-Wearing ugly gray mesh shoes because there were no other options.

We certainly should not be having disrespectful arguments over it and being divided about it. I admit I have been part of the problem and I apologize.

So, I declare here that I am willing to respect the views of people who take a purely constitutional view of the RTKABA. In my heart of hearts, I mostly agree with them. But the gun activism I am involved in is grass roots, practical RTKABA for today, not over 200 years ago, not in some ideal future that will likely never happen. I only wish more pro gun people would respect that side of it, the work people on that side are putting in and the success they are having. What we do effects what guns you can buy and what you can do with them now and the in the foreseeable future. I am interested in what I am able to do with what kind of guns, in my lifetime. The next generation will either pick up the torch, or they won't.

The answer to the OP's question to me is: Whether there should be a line or not is irrelevant. There is a line, right now. That is a fact. And that line is drawn way too far to the left. I'm about moving that line to the right or at the very least keeping it from sliding farther to the left. And the group I belong to is having provable success at that, even acknowledged by the anti-gun crowd. The head of the VCDL gets asked a similar question to the OP's a lot. His answer is always something like: "We are a pro-gun activist group. We are not in the business of suggesting what gun restrictions are appropriate. We are in the business of analyzing proposed gun restrictions and saying whether they are appropriate or not. So far, we haven't seen any that are."

Pro gun people need more unity and less division. This is where the left beats us. Whether they are just FUDs who only want to ban bump stocks or they are hard-core types who would like to ban all private ownership of firearms, they will all band together for any anti-gun bill or behind any anti-gun politician. Pro gun people are so into their political "ideology boxes" that sometimes they can't can't see that their "perfect 2A world" approaches negatively affect moving that "line."
Thanks for the post. And I agree, disagreements should be over the issue and not be personal attacks.

The problem is that there is a line and that bump stocks can now possibly be considered part of that equation and where the line is. That is scary. People that thought this was a good idea for political optics may be wishing that this never did happen.

Beyond that line, if there indeed is to be any such dividing line, I'm okay with tightly holding onto such arms. IMO, speed of targeting has nothing to do with it, either. In the sense that how rapidly one can swing a fist, shoot an arrow, fire a bullet ... none of that equates to indiscriminate impact beyond the targeted person. (And, thus, the so-called NFA category of tools should never have been criminalized or limited from all people.)

As for the political "litmus" test: for me, I believe any stripping needs to err on the side of ensuring the People as individuals have the practical means of countering a wayward "governing" few, minus the indiscriminate category of weaponry (which impact quite simply cannot be controlled by the average person); and that such stripping must by definition be strictly as part of the warrants/trial process in which a person has every opportunity to defend against such accusations. Else, we no longer live in a nation where one is in fact held to be innocent until proven guilty.

Any tighter controls over such access all but ensure an oppressed People has zero chance on any level, individual or otherwise, of prevailing against a force sent against the individual. Strictly disallow use of bio/chem/nuclear and bomb/blast tools except in outright warfare situations, disallowed by "police" forces, then an oppressed People have a fighting chance to throw off such yokes.

YMMV, depending on POV.

JMO
I can see your point and how you explained it. I just hope my underlying point was not missed: if a POTUS can ban bump stocks (or effectively recommend that they are banned), you can't much get less benign than that. I mean, if the litmus test is a bump stock, then it is hard to argue that hi cap mags or other things should not be banned. "

" Someone asked me this once in another thread which has definitely gone off topic.

You can't discriminate between WMD and bump stocks? Perhaps therein lies the problem.
This was my answer to that (edited for this thread)

And to answer your question about distinguishing between WMD's and bump stocks..nope, I do not really see a difference and here is why. Quite simply, anyone sitting in the Presidents office will decide what they think is appropriate for me to own, buy, carry for my personal defense. If some POTUS thinks bump stocks should be banned, which is at the total end of the spectrum from WMD's...what stops such a person from declaring anything in the middle deemed necessary to be banned.
That IS the problem when we think it is OK for a person or government to decide what a person wants. There is enough stuff in a Walmart or Home Depot where someone can buy stuff and design a weapon that can cause mass destruction. It might not fit the definition of WMD, but being able to make something to kill 20 people or more is definitely more of a threat than a potential use of a bump stock..

What is your personal litmus test of what should be banned under law and what you consider NOT an infringement. "

Get it "right" at the 5K level, then 10Ks got all that easier to finish fast. Get it "right" in the 10Ks, then half-marathon times began to drop. Found I didn't generally have more than 7-10mi of quick pace in me, generally less. But if I could spread the ugly sections across a race, where say a base pace of ~6:50 were combined with several ~1-2mi "surge" sections of sub-6 pace (or even much below that), I could turn quite respectable times overall. Kept toying with this training strategy for a few years, and found it translated well into the half-marathon distances.

Ah, well. Ancient history.

I've no idea what your own training regimen consists of, in terms of integrating Fartlek intervals, surge sections, or negative-splits. On your ~7:30avg training run, did you consume food/energy during the run? It'd be interesting to see how long you could keep up a series of surges, following consuming ~300Kcal of intake. Say, every 5mi do a 2mi series of surges followed by 3mi of recovery, food consumption, then another 5mi surge/recovery segment. (Never did toy with food intake, myself, which explains why I always ran out of gas by 20mi or so.)
Anything over 12 miles I take some gels. I take a gel 10 minutes before the run one or two during the run. I will take some Gatorade with me if over 12 miles and hot/humid.

I backed my running days off to 5. I have one dedicated off day and a cross training day. Typically my Long run is on Sunday (10-18 miles) I will incorporate some tempo running in that every other week. Monday is 6-9 miles, Tuesday is a speed day or 8-10 miles, Wed is cross-training, Thurs is 6-9 miles, Fri is hills or 6-9 miles and Saturday off. "

Just to put this in perspective, this guy holds the world record right now on a certified course/race 2 hr 1 min 39 sec (4 min 38 sec per mile). He attempted to run sub 2 hours a couple of years ago with pacers, a flat track and no wind. And missed it by 25 seconds.

To run sub 2 hours, one would need to basically be sprinting a 100 yard dash in just a tad under 16 seconds continuously for 26.2 miles.

Training is one thing, but genetics obviously a major factor here

I am hoping to run sub 3 hours in Nov or Dec this year and I would be happy with that being 55 years old "

We were told we could not have anyone on the panel or ask questions, or make a statement, so we figured sitting there with the buttons would at least get our message on camera. You accusing me of using the antis' playbook is way out of line, BTW. I put in a lot of work for gun rights and I know their playbook better than most. What I also know is we look like nuts and lose ground in battle for the RTKABA by making statements that private citizens should own WMD. If you think that helps, you are as wrong as you can be.

What have you actually done for gun rights lately?

If some moron thinks bump stocks should be banned, which is at the total end of the spectrum from WMD's...what stops such an idiot from declaring anything in the middle deemed necessary to be banned.

Have a brilliant 2A day "

Just right out of the anti's playbook for banning hi-cap magazines, "assault" rifles, and other firearms....to include bump stocks

Mark Kelly, the hubby of Gifford used his Navy credentials and argued the same thing: that he has handled many arms and was an expereience officer in the Navy before and that he thinks that things should be banned. "

The reason why I said the BI should be high enough is that is equal to the UMBI/UIMBI

Just my opinion, but if you have assetss in excess of 500K, you need to talk to a financial advisor and make sure you have enough insurance for situations "

" Assuming you have a KY auto policy, you should have your UMBI/UIMBI equal to your BI limits. Most people way underinsure themselves. We have 500/500/100 and a 2 m Umbrella (the Umbrella does not help in this situation, but the BI limits certainly would apply)

Under KY law, if the person that was at fault does not have enough insurance, you KY auto policy would pay under the UMBI/UIMBI. Medical payments would also be used for any co-pays.

See an attorney. If your limits were below those of the injury amounts, you need to go to court and get the money from the individual.

I disagree with some of that.
Children should not be punished for the acts of the parents. The parents need to be prosecuted.

If the kid got into Stanford, regardless of the parental misdeeds, I think they should be allowed to stay as long as they meet the requirements. The parents need to be sent to jail and severly punished to send a message that it is not OK and that THEY will suffer. "

Let me clarify, I am talking about waiting periods for people to exercise their rights. My example of a felon being released and having to wait to get a pardon or whatever is the same as a waiting period to buy a gun for anyone.....which is WRONG. Period.

I can't wrap my head around why people think it is OK for anyone not in jail to be denied a God given right. Call me crazy. "

On one hand:

  • It's not like the felon is a victim here. They screwed up big time. I don't have a lot of sympathy for them.
  • Most states have "disenfranchisement" laws that basically say if you commit a felony, you give up some of your rights, for life. It is as if you are no longer a full citizen. It is part of the punishment. Incarceration is not supposed to be the only downside of committing a felony.
  • I worry more about them getting the right to vote back. The left's support of voting rights restoration shows me they think ex-felons are more likely to vote left.
  • We are in a struggle to salvage the RTKABA for the rest of us. I see campaigning for the felon's rights to own guns works against that.
  • Remember, if you start giving non-violent felons gun rights, you are also going to be opening the door for violent felons to get guns. And yes, I know the worn out refrain, "criminals don't follow the laws anyway, yadda yadda." But I want the justice system to have the tools be able to put a violent felony back in prison if he gets caught with a gun. I also know the refrain, "If a criminal is dangerous, he should be on the street at all, yadda, yadda." But that theory is not a practical reality today and never will be."
  • Felons who have served their sentence can apply to the governor of the state where the felony was committed to have their rights restored.

On the other hand:
  • I think the whole concept of "felonies" n the US is out of control. "Felony" is a concept from English common law and it was originally a capital crime, or close to it. You lost all your property and all your rights and then you were either executed, imprisoned for life or exiled. Now we have some pretty benign crimes being called felonies and no consistency between states on what is a felony. How can you be perfectly legal carrying a gun without a permit in MO, cross into IL and be felon even if you have a permit from MO? I can see it being a crime, but a felony? Ireland did away with the whole felony/misdemeanor distinction several years ago and it makes sense. I would get that whole concept out of our legal system. There ought to be a guideline for levels of crimes, say from one to five, each with its own rules.
  • I don't think the feds should hinge federal gun rights on state felony laws. If the felony is a state felony, gun ownership implications should be up to the states. So if you commit a felony in IL, for instance, it would be up to IL if you could later have guns in IL. It would also be up to MO to say, "Even though Joe Blow has a felony in IL, it was not a violent felony, and it is OK for him to have guns in MO."
Respectfully, I think this is one situation where there are no "hands" to consider. The only one and single reason for a gubermint to be able to usurp God's will is when that person has been put in prison because they broke the law. And that is not really usurping, I think the Bible has plenty of ammo to back me up on this.

Once released, that person has every absolute right to be able to protect themselves and their family with a firearm if they want to. Your contention is that they can petition the Governor to get their rights back. I wonder how long that process takes. Just like the handful of women that got killed during the waiting period to buy a firearm and their ex spouse of partenr came in that time to kill them.

Sorry. Keep them in jail if they are a threat or if they need to be punished more or made examples of as a deterrent. "

First: what is the purpose of removing someones 2A rights (which BTW I have a fundmental problem with since it is a God given right and not one that can be denied by man unless that person is in jail) because they have committed a felony and have served their time? Is it a deterrence? Is it a further punishment? Is it so the person cannot legally by a firearm to hurt someone else?

It makes zero sense. A person stabs someone and they get thrown in prison and released and they cannot buy firearms? But buying a knife is OK? "

Siam created the thread Felon and GCA 1968: Actress cries as she pleads guilty in college admissions scandal.
" Actress Felicity Huffman cries as she pleads guilty in college admissions scandal

1: This is the correct forum, (not current events) because it is about gun rights
2: This is not about a Hollywood star that might or not own firearms or her thoughts about them, it is about being a felon and no longer having the right to bear arms.

When she appeared in court in Boston, prosecutors recommended a sentence of four months prison time for the "Desperate Housewives" TV star for her role in the college admissions scandal. They also suggested a $20,000 fine and 12 months of supervised release for the charge, which is a felony.
Unless one has not been following the news, a bunch of rich folks basically paid a guy to get their kids into "prestigious" colleges. They are now being held accountable, which they should be. They will also have been convicted of a felony or plead guilty to a felony which means that they can no longer purchase or own firearms.

This a great example of why the Gun Control Act of 1968 needs to be repealed.

Totally stupid that these folks cannot bear arms after they serve their sentences. "

He went nuts over the weekend and tried to kill himself. When the LE showed up he wanted the LE to shoot him. He is currently in a physiatrist facility being evaluated.

My sister has been totally stressed in the last 5 years with his declining health and his unwillingness to help himself. Don't get me wrong, he has been a great husband and father to his kids. I think at this point in his life he realized HE screwed up and now wants to end it.

My concern and prayers for him are that the idiots in the psych ward will believe him when he says he is OK and they let him go home and he will kill himself.

Prayers requested and thanks for your time "

Odds that she was watching that episode at the same time I was watching my show comes to 1:1872 (78 episodes of Justified, 24 for HW:FF).

That is not counting that she was actually watching Justified at all at the same time which would obviously make it even less probable.

Sports teams dump Kate Smith's 'God Bless America' because of her racist songs

Just to be clear, nobody is not stopping playing "God Bless America", they are just not using her rendition.

"We have recently become aware that several songs performed by Kate Smith contain offensive lyrics that do not reflect our values as an organization," the Flyers said in a statement to CNN.
"As we continue to look into this serious matter, we are removing Kate Smith's recording of 'God Bless America' from our library and covering up the statue that stands outside of our arena."
The Yankees said the team also was no longer playing Smith's iconic 1939 version of the song because she sang at least two songs during the 1930s that are now considered racist.
"Why Darkies are Born"

"Someone had to pick the cotton,
Someone had to plant the corn,
Someone had to slave and be able to sing,
That's why darkies were born"
Some have said when she sang the songs it was satire and was to oppose racism, others take a view she thought it was funny. I have no clue.

" Canadian police are looking for the suspect who posed as a deliveryman and shot a woman with a crossbow

I thought this was new. It is an updated story from Nov 2018. A guy shows up and shoots her with a crossbow. The noteworthy thing is that the Canadian police are now releasing the video to have people help identify the BG. This happened 5 months ago.

I get it that the police might keep info away from the public so as not to spook the BG. But after 5 months I wonder how useful this will be.

A woman will be in recovery for the rest of her life after someone posing as a delivery person shot her point-blank with a crossbow.

The attack, which is being investigated as an attempted murder, occurred in November in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. This week, police released video footage of the suspect at the victim's door in the hope that the person could be identified.
Emergency services responding to a Mississauga residence on November 7, found a 44-year-old woman suffering from life-threatening injuries and transported her to a hospital, police said in a news release Monday.
Investigators have since determined the victim answered her front door and was met with a person holding a large box. After a brief conversation, the suspect shot the woman in the chest using a crossbow that was concealed in the box. The suspect then fled to a dark-colored pickup truck, authorities said.

" A gun in a diaper bag went off, injuring dad and daughter. Now the dad has died

Prayers for the family. A very sad day, and one that is preventable. Always be aware of where your firearm is. I am glad the baby will be OK.

A man who accidentally shot himself while changing his daughter's diaper in a vehicle in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, has died, police said.

Timothy Roshun Smith was shot in the leg and chest, and his daughter's leg was injured, when a loaded gun in a diaper bag went off Saturday outside a Chuck E Cheese's.
The 22-year-old man died Monday, said Capt. Johnny Evans of the Vestavia Hills Police Department. The girl is expected to make a full recovery, Evans said.
Smith was in the back seat of a vehicle Saturday outside the pizza restaurant, changing the girl's diaper. The gun went off as he picked up or reached inside a diaper bag on the floorboard, Evans said after the incident.
After the gun went off, the bullet traveled through Smith's leg and then the child's leg before lodging in the man's chest, Evans said.

Chaos at Walmart as woman performs karate, son exposes himself, dog steals food

Chaos descended on a Wisconsin Walmart store Wednesday night after a karate-performing mother, her naked son, and their belligerent dog shoplifted and ran amok in the store.
After being told to leave the store, the woman began showing off her karate moves in the parking lot to fend off police officers.

The dog tried to flee the crime scene, albeit unsuccessfully, with a box of Jiffy Cornbread Muffin Mix in his mouth.

After a brief fight with the officers, Smith was arrested. As a last-ditch attempt, she tried to kick a window out of a police car.

Her raucous son, meanwhile, was getting fully naked and began exposing himself to other customers at the store. He then tried to cover himself with new clothes from the store without intending to pay for them, police said.

One thing I never considered is that some solo/free climbers climb with a BASE parachute in case they fall. So, if you have a legal permit to climb El Capitan but fall and deploy your chute, then you broke the law because BASE jumping without a permit is illegal. If landed without a parachute and got killed he would be OK legally

Reminds me of the dialogue in Judge Dredd:

Judge Dredd: And you haven't even been out of jail for 24 hours. He's habitual, Hershey. An automatic five year sentence. How do you plead?
Herman Ferguson: Not guilty?
Judge Dredd: I knew you'd say that.
Ferguson: Five years?! No! No! I had no choice! They were killing each other in there.
Judge Dredd: You could have gone out the window.
Ferguson: Forty floors? It would have been suicide!
Judge Dredd: Maybe, but it's legal.

Siam created the thread Boys rescued from Thai cave were sedated with ketamine. Interesting article.
" This is the CNN article
Boys rescued from Thai cave were sedated with ketamine

According to details of the rescue released in a medical journal Thursday, the boys were given unspecified doses of ketamine, also known as party drug Special K, by the rescue divers as they were taken out of Tham Luang cave.
Reports at the time had suggested that the children, who had been trapped for two weeks, were sedated during the operation, but officials gave few details.
"We had to use the means that could keep the children not to be panicky while we were carrying them out," Thai Navy SEAL commander Rear Adm. Arpakorn Yookongkaew told CNN shortly after the rescue. "Most importantly, they are alive and safe."
The link in the article is for the New England Journal of Medicine writeup. In case you do not subscribe to NEJM here are some interesting things about the rescue and the preplanning for it from a medical POV.

The Tham Luang cave rescue mission to save 12 boys and their soccer coach1,2 provided an important experience base for the prehospital care of patients with hypothermia who had been anesthetized before their arrival at the field hospital. With impending monsoon rains and concerns about falling oxygen levels in the cave, a plan to urgently extricate the patients was developed. The plan involved the use of ketamine-based anesthesia and a positive-pressure full-face mask (supplying 80% oxygen); the boys were swum out of the cave wearing poorly fitting wet suits in cold water.
The after-action review on day 1 identified hypothermia and inefficient team coordination as the critical components, and the Thailand Cave Rescue Protocol, which addressed airway, breathing, circulation, and hypothermia management (ABC+H), was developed. Resuscitation roles (ABC) were assigned to an anesthesiologist, respirologist, and pediatric cardiologist, respectively. The hypothermia management was formalized and assigned to the anesthesiologist. The accuracy of core temperature measurement was improved with the use of tympanic membrane temperature monitoring, which was performed every 5 minutes until a temperature of 35.0°C was observed for at least four readings. Ketamine, a vasoconstrictor that impairs shivering, is associated with smaller drops in core temperature and is a good choice for patients at risk for hypothermia.

" Good for them and I am glad none of the kids were hurt. I think there are lots of learning lessons in this video

The primary one is that they did not consider there was a second robber. Lots of times it looked like the gunman could have shot the kids. I think that there was something wrong with the gun (not loaded) or more likely the gunman was overwhelmed and might not have had the stomach to actually shoot someone.

Siam created the thread A man walked out of prison 13 years ago thinking he was free. The feds say he owes 16 months.
" Assuming everything is true in the article, the man should be left alone. You do not send someone back to jail if you were the one that let him out.

A man walked out of prison 13 years ago thinking he was free. The feds say he owes 16 months

Demetrius Anderson walked out of a Connecticut state prison in 2006 thinking he was ready to leave behind his criminal past and build a new life as an upstanding citizen.

The Philadelphia native stayed in Connecticut and stayed out of trouble. He has two jobs, lives in a nice apartment and belongs to a church.
But last week, eight US Marshals came to his home. He was certain they were after the wrong person. He hadn't committed a crime in more than 13 years. They insisted he come with them to court because he still had a 16-month federal sentence to serve for crimes he committed in Philadelphia.
Anderson thought his state sentence was concurrent to his federal one. And when he got out of prison early, there were no federal officials to transfer him to another facility.
He went out and got a job, reported to his parole officer, and lived a crime-free life.
But during an internal audit, federal marshals reportedly discovered Anderson never served prison time for his federal charge. They asked a Pennsylvania judge to issue a warrant for his detention.

Siam created the thread Unsung hero of World War II: Jacques Stosskopf.
" Most people, even people in France might not know if this man. I ran across his name while researching about WWII. I can't imagine the pain and suffering he and his family went through.

Jacques Stosskopf was a Frenchman who became a collaborator with the Germans. Or so it seemed. He built up trust with the Germans and was achieved the posting of deputy director of naval construction at the German-held Lorient U-boat arsenal. In this role he was despised and hated by the workers there. Only a handful of people in the resistance knew that he was providing valuable information to the allies on U-boat operations.

Imagine, living a lie and being hated while risking your life and being loyal to your country the whole time.

He was eventually found out, tortured and executed.

Siam created the thread Republicans’ day of reckoning on Trump is coming.
" An interesting opinion piece from FOX

Republicans’ day of reckoning on Trump is coming

Twelve Senate Republicans stopped Donald Trump from invoking a national emergency to pay for a wall on the southern border last Friday…three times as many senators than needed to pass it. That’s the good news. The bad news? Even more Republicans will be needed to override Trump’s veto. What’s worse is the fact that if more Republicans don’t join Democrats in overriding this veto they will provide Trump even more power when he has a history of not acting in the best interest of our country.
Now, it is even more important to override Trump’s veto in light of his comments last week, about the use of force at his disposal. He said in an interview with Breitbart “I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump — I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad.”

One person has been charged in connection with a “well-planned” terrorist attack that killed 49 people and injured dozens more in two mosques in New Zealand on Friday, authorities said.

The New Zealand police said four people -- three men and one woman -- were in custody in connection with the attack. Investigators later defused a number of improvised explosive devices that were found inside vehicles. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden described the suspects as one principal, two associates and one person not directly connected to the attacks. She said the suspects were not on any security watch lists.

This is the part that really surpised me. I assumed that this law was an anachronism, and had been on the books for 100 year or more.

Sex between those unmarried was criminalized in 1973. The bill that passed Tuesday was part of the legislature’s efforts to clean up its criminal code, removing unenforceable laws from the books, state Republican Rep. Paul Ray told FOX13.

Florida man mistakenly arrested in sex spa case plans to sue sheriff, says arrest upended his life

A husband and father of two is working to clear his name after he was erroneously arrested as part of the ongoing investigation into a widespread sex trafficking ring at several massage parlors in South Florida.
Investigators initially connected him to the case via a blue, four-door Porsche that was parked near the spa, TCPalm reported.
Authorities said the blue Porsche actually belonged to a woman with the same last name and was also co-registered to a man not named Patel.
While searching driver's license photos of men named Patel in Martin County, investigators found Sandipkumar Patel. They said his license photo matched the look of a man seen on video the police had shot at the spa.

Chicago police blast Jussie Smollett 'phony attack': 'Bogus police reports cause real harm'

"I'm left hanging my head and asking why," a visibly upset Johnson told reporters. "Why would anyone, especially an African-American man, use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations? How could someone look at the hatred and suffering associated with that symbol...how can an individual who has been embraced by the city of Chicago turn around and slap everyone in this city by making this false claim?"
Smollett told police he was attacked by two masked men as he was walking home from a Subway sandwich shop at around 2 a.m on Jan. 29. The actor, who is black and gay, said the masked men beat him, made derogatory comments and yelled "This is MAGA country" — an apparent reference to President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again" — before fleeing.
Johnson said police found the "check that [Smollett] used to pay [two brothers]" to fake the beating, adding he paid them $3,500 "for the two of them in total, and then $500 upon return."

South Carolina teacher sees student, 7, riding bike on highway, helps him save dad

Keller Sutherland was driving home when she noticed other cars zipping past a young boy riding a bike down U.S. 25, the teacher said in a video posted to the Greenville County School’s Facebook. She recognized the boy as Cameron, a 7-year-old former student. She immediately turned her car around and asked the boy what was going on.
Cameron told her that his diabetic father had collapsed at his house. He said he first tried to call 911, but he didn’t know the passcode to his father’s locked cell phone. He then tried the neighbors, but no one was home. His last recourse was to pedal five miles to his grandmother’s house.
I thought all cell phones were require to be able to dial 911, even if the phone is locked. I also thought that all cell phones, even if thier is a plan or not has to be able to dial 911. I wonder if the kid got confused. Either way, he is 7 and did a great job.

I did check our phones and you can dial 911 (or emergency number) even if locked. "

You know, I will never know the trauma of feeling like I’m not born in the right body. And that, that is a privilege that I have -- no matter how poor my family was when I was born.”

Siam created the thread China, trade deals, impact for large and small business's, a free flowing conversation.
" This thread is more about random thoughts and I will include my personal experience with designing and selling things and how prices work. I AM NOT a professional and take that into consideration. When I produce and sell something it is low quantities. Most things I gift.

Folks dog China for cheap prices and products, and those are valid concerns for many things. Then again, you get what you pay for (capitalism at its finest). I have been designing electronic devices for years as a hobby and sell some things at shows and word of mouth.

In the hobby forum I posted about my latest thing (weather station). Just for educational purposes, this is the approx cost break down using a Chinese company for the production of PCB;s.

For 10 PCB's, it is under 40 USD for the product and shipping.

If I use a US company for the same service, it is 5 to 10 times more. Turn aound time is about the same.

Now, imagine, if every circuit board was made in the US that is used in your products how much more the product would cost. I really have no idea. I just wanted folks to know there is a huge difference in price between producing stuff in HK (China) and the US. Tarriffs and taxes would not help IMO because if China was not a competitor, the US companies could charge even more.

Random thoughts and I am not a business nor economic major so I am interested in your thoughts. "

It is a Quadrapod with 12DOF(degrees of freedom). I used an Arduino Nano for the processor and a homemade servo controller and regulator to charge the battery. I have a Bluetooth (BLE 4.0) module installed to control it with a phone app or it will go autonomously.

The biggest mistake I made was designing the body. I need to redo it so the cover fits. It has 12 9G servos.

Took about 20 hours of total printing time for the parts. I used Sketchup for most of it.

The stuff on the side is for an ultrasonic sensor and it will trigger recordings if it gets close to people or my cats I have yet to incorporate that in. I figure I will test and THEN print the body a second time

I was watching "Petrified Forest" (Humphrey Bogart) this morning and there was a sign in the cafe that said "Tipping is un-American keep your change". The movie was made in 1936.

The original source of the tipping debate wasn’t just rooted in cheapskates who didn’t feel like leaving a gratuity. When tipping began to emerge after the Civil War, Martyris writes that it sparked arguments about whether the practice encouraged servile behavior, “degrading America’s democratic, puritanical and anti-aristocratic ethic.” Rich luminaries like Mark Twain and Andrew Carnegie gained public accolades for refusing to tip, and their fellow Americans’ hatred of tipping even led to a series of legal battles over the giving of gratuities, Martyris writes.

Siam created the thread Origins of common idioms.
" I was watching TCM recently and they were doing a bio of Erroll Flynn. I have the idiom "In like Fynn" over the years. I did not know its etymology originates from Flynn's prowness with women, and specifically to a supposed daliance with some underage ladies.

My Nana always use to tell me to "Mind your P's and Q's" There are lots of theories on that one

Mind your P's and Q's

One explanation favoured in a letter to the editors of Notes and Queries dated 1851, as well as by the 2007 revision of the Oxford English Dictionary, is a literal interpretation of the saying, regarding the lowercase letters p and q in the context of the school-room or typesetting in the printing-office
Another proposed origin is from the English pubs and taverns of the 17th century. Bartenders would keep a watch on the alcohol consumption of the patrons; keeping an eye on the pints and quarts that were consumed. As a reminder to the patrons, the bartender would recommend they "mind their Ps and Qs"

Glad they caught the lady.

Police say Whipple got a manicure at Crystal Nails on the afternoon of December 29 and then tried to pay the bill -- $35, according to CNN affiliate KSNV -- with a credit card. When the payment didn't go through, she allegedly said she'd get cash from her car.
But the customer started driving away, and the owner and her husband ran outside to try to stop her, police say.
Surveillance video shows the owner running in front of the car and momentarily putting her hands on the hood as her husband grabs at the car from the back.

The owner "was thrown under the vehicle" as the car accelerated out of the parking lot, Las Vegas police Lt. Ray Spencer said.

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas said on Wednesday that he is planning to "wait and see" what the President does and won't "prejudge" the scenario when asked if the President has the legal authority to declare a state of emergency over the wall.
"I think it's critically important that we secure the border," Cruz said, but he added, "I'm also a constitutionalist. I have long argued that the president - any president Republican or Democrat -- should be bound by the Constitution and by federal statute and so I want to wait and see what the President does and what legal justifications he puts forth and assess them on their merits."
"I don't want to prejudge it until he actually acts," Cruz said.
Well, there is an answer to this, he just does not want to give it untill the politcal winds blow a ceertain way. "

Siam created the thread Oregon Says Auto Insurers Must Accommodate Gender "X".
" I do not care what sex you think you are or who you marry. But making the law to have to address this is stupid. Imagine if this continues to all states and the next time you update your auto policy they have to ask you what gender you are? (can't get mad at the insurance agent, they are just doing the job according to law by asking the stupid question). I get it. But I lost it after they started adding letters to LGB (T,,Q,Q,I,A,A,P).

Oregon Says Auto Insurers Must Accommodate Gender "X"

State laws have begun to recognize individuals who identify their sex or gender outside of strictly “male” or “female.” In the past year, some states have passed laws requiring that personal identification documents, such as driver’s licenses and birth certificates, provide individuals with three options in selecting their sex or gender: (1) Male; (2) Female; or (3) Non-specified. In June 2017, Oregon became the first state to allow individuals to identify their sex as “M,” “F” or “X” on their driver’s licenses and state identification cards. A handful of other jurisdictions have followed, as California, the District of Columbia, New York, Vermont and Washington have enacted, or are in the process of enacting, similar laws.

'Traditional masculinity' deemed harmful, could lead to sexual harassment, medical group says

The main thrust of the subsequent research is that traditional masculinity — marked by stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression — is, on the whole, harmful.

Siam created the thread Brazil to combat crime by loosening gun control.
" Good for them. Crime is rampant in most of S America. Like everyone, they should have a right to defend themselves.

Brazil to combat crime by loosening gun control

Brazil racked up nearly 64,000 homicides in 2017, the highest overall number in the world. Over 70% of those were committed with firearms, widely available to criminals on the black market. Here in São Paulo, a megalopolis of 12 million people, over a quarter of residents say they have been held up at gunpoint at some moment in their lives, according to a study this year by the city’s business school Insper.

“It’s not fair, we’ve become hostages in our own country,” said Mr. Sotero Júnior. “We can’t take it anymore.”

Now, Brazil is set to embark on an experiment that will determine what happens when you loosen gun restrictions in a country battling an overpowering wave of gun crime.

Siam created the thread Hundreds of TSA screeners, working without pay, calling out sick at major airports.
" I am glad I am not flying anywhere soon even though we have the TSA Pre-Check screening. Now, I am not a fan of TSA, but they are part of Homeland Security. So is it not counter-intuitive to not pay everyone in Homeland Security because of a shutdown under the guise of Homeland Security?

Hundreds of TSA screeners, working without pay, calling out sick at major airports

I don't care who folks are blaming for the shutdown, Dems or Trump. The problem is we might have compromised our security. "
