" Yes, I put this here instead of current events because I think it is a good read.

Wisconsin police say they found a fugitive hiding in a solar-powered bunker in the woods

This is not about that the guy is a dirtbag. But he was able to live on his own in the woods for three years. Just an interesting read.

1: He used solar panels for three years to power his stuff
2: He scavanged for food and things he needed from a landfill

Over the course of three years, Button told police, he made daily and nightly trips to the Ringle landfill on a bicycle for things like clothes, food, tools, equipment and electronics. The bunker grew cluttered, which forced him to make the cave even deeper.
Button told police that he had solar power to run his TV, radio, fans and lights. He made a generator with a bicycle that he would pedal if he needed an additional power source.
"Button had explained he could find just about anything in the landfill," Deiler wrote in his report.
In the colder months, Button kept warm with a fire pit.
For water, he told police that he created a well system by digging a hole in a wet part of the woods and lining it with sand and charcoal. He'd boil the water before using it.
Button told police he had multiple ways to get in and out of his bunker so nearby hikers wouldn't spot him. If he did see people out hiking or hunting, he would make "small talk with them about a nice day to be on a hike, and continued on his way."

If you haven't seen Threads, it's well worth seeing.

The film The War Game is disturbing, but worth it.

The animated film When The Wind Blows is outstanding.
"On the Beach" is awesome. I just can't get "Waltzing with Matilda" out of my head every time I see that movie "

Good Movie, but I like the original "Fail-Safe" better. The same year that Fail-Safe came out so did Dr Strangelove and James Earl Jones was actually in Dr Strangelove. "

I don't want to get into semantics...but I will

j/k..Seriously, what is a "law-abiding citizen"? A criminal that once got a Felony charge for theft when they were 20 years old and have led a perfect life since then and cannot own a firearm because of stupid laws? Or is it the regular folks that routinely drive 10 miles over the speed limit, breaking the law everyday?

Is it the person that got a felony charge on them 30 years ago for tax evasion, but has otherwise led an honest life? Or is it the person that does not stop at stop signs all the time?

Just curious what your take on a law-abiding citizen is (or the NRA's take on it)

BTW: The traffic offenders I mentioned are a much larger threat to the safety of society and the risk of having insurance rates raised for everyone than the other two examples I gave. "

From the link:

"What was originally thought to be suspicious packages turned out to be a pair of pressure cookers left in the subway station.

The MTA said to expect delays and changes to service were on the 2, 3, 4, 5, A, C, J and Z lines due to the investigation."
It would depend on the laws in that state. If something was placed there for the intent of (and I will paraphrase) "attempting to cause panic or a reaction to the public" it could be considered a terroristic "crime". Or something like that. It is as if someone hangs a noose up in public to make a statement. That could be considered a hate crime.

I just read about a few news stories that had similar verbiage. If I find them I will post them.

Anyway, stupid thing to do. "

When he veto's them, they will override him. That is how much the swamp hates Donald Trump. They are willing to dump our 2nd Amendment rights in order to defeat him.

We the People need to stop focusing on President Trump and focus on OUR Representatives. We need to let them know that we are tired of their bull and want them to work with the President in protecting our rights.

Your position seems to be very similar to the never Trumpers. You do not like his methodology so you don't want to play. That way of thinking will get us a full fledged Socialist elected in 2020.

And that would be a disaster.
You brought up the poker analogy. There are more than two people at the table. Just saying, it is not a two-player game. Your contention is he is playing against the Dems, mine is he is not, there are others at the table that actually care. "

I hate that analogy. I have heard it before. In poker everyone has the same goal: to win and make money. The strategy is to let them not know what your possible advantage is. But the end result or goal IS known. I mean the people sitting down at the poker table can all honestly state prior to the hand being dealt that their goal is to win as much money as they want.

Unless you think the goal of playing poker is to come to a mutual agreement on who wins and/or share the pot LOL

That is not what this is about. We do not know what the end goal is when it comes to the 2A for Trump.

I personally think it is a terrible analogy.

As an aside. If we are making card game references, if you are playing Hearts....you for sure want to know what your teammate thinks and you want that info conveyed to your teammate as best you can so you can win. You play together to outwit your opponent. That is a better analogy IMO. I don't know what Trump wants to do. "

I am not a coroner so I really have no idea what the difference would be on the human body. If the sheet was wound tight it could have the same effect as a rope (breaking the neck and strangulation). If it was not, you would most likely die by strangulation. Not my expertise. Lots of questions to be answered for sure. But that is what makes a great conspiracy theory. On one hand, you have a pedophile that is not uncommonly killed in prison anyway, you have Federal employees (jailers) that did not do their jobs (which happens quite frequently) and yo have gaffes in how the suicide watch was removed and what was in place. All common things that probably happen throughout the year in the penal system

Then for the conspiracy folks, they try to ignore what can normally happen to a pedophile in prison and try to tie the cause to something else, ignoring the fact that it happens sometimes.

I am curious as anyone else to find out what happened. Remember though: this man had lots of people from all walks of society that might have wanted him dead. It is not only the Clintons. "

Hard to argue with what he has accomplished. Personally, I don't care HOW he wins, as long as it benefits America. Kind of like a physician who has great bedside manner but can't diagnose their way out of a paper bag. Conversely, I would prefer a physician who is a awesome clinician who is rude.

I've not seen Trump do ANYTHING to enact Red Flag laws!
He may have supported the ban on bump stocks, yet this was hardly a unilateral decision. He is not a king!

I fear you are seeking perfection in a imperfect world.
Nope. I am not seeking perfection in this world at all. And I have said this many times as well: I am a single-issue voter. The 2A. I am financially secure, and I have no problems with any other issues right now in my life. People can do what they want. The 2A is about the most clear part of our Constitution there is. It is not hard for a politician to tell me what they want to do. Bump Stock Trump has said numerous times he is for Red Flag laws, he is or has considered banning suppressors. If he wants my vote, all he has to do is say I am not for Red Flag laws and I am not for bans on anything that applies to the 2A. Untill then...no cigar.

It is really quite simple: he just needs to tell us what he honestly belives. I am not guessing nor am I wasting my time trying to guess wht he "really" beleives. Done with that. I am way to old now to really care. "

You can use semantics like "playing the game" all you want. That is code for misrepresentation, lying, and deceiving in my book. Trump so far has not lived up to some of the things I wanted from him. What I will not do is vote for Trump again.
Trump is anti RTKABA, already having proven that ,

My honest and sincere answer is this: By keep voting for a person that is "lessor" of the other choice, we keep slowly diminishing our rights. Granted, Trump or whoever may not be as "bad" as Biden. But where does this end. Slow dying death of our rights? I am sensitive to cancer patients, having had my wife be one, and those that are terminal, and also others in my family, so please forgive the following analogy/comment.

At what point do you just tell the doctor enough is enough, you are just prolonging this, just in the hopes, a miracle cure will come about.

We need a total change in our minds on how we want to vote. If we do not, then things will only get worse. "

Good post. I would like to comment on the things I bolded. First: I am not sure what you mean by "Don't be out there". If you mean do not carry an AR-15 into a store with a ski mask, I think that is a good idea,, though legal. If you mean do not OC, then I would have to disagree. I just was not sure what you are referring to.

The second part I bolded: I do not start conversations about 2A nor do I abstain from them. If a person is inclined to ask you about your beliefs, I think it is OK to state them and let the conversation end. Family dynamics are unique among families. Some can tolerate a discussion while others cannot. My MIL loves to start conversations about politics and stuff and I just state what I believe, say I respect her opinion, but I came here to enjoy a good meal. Family time is a time to enjoy each others company, not to get into arguments. Then again, if a person's family situation is one where they love to challenge each other but leave the dinner table after in a good mood after a good discussion...then go for it! YMMV. "

" Why wouldn't people think that Trump may be behind the "suicide" of Epstien. He seemed to have liked the guy until recently:

Among Epstein's powerful associates are presidents Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.
"I've known Jeff for fifteen years. Terrific guy," Trump told New York magazine in 2002. "He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it -- Jeffrey enjoys his social life."

However, on July 12, Trump said that he threw Epstein out of his Mar-a-Lago club years ago.
"Jeffrey Epstein was not somebody that I respected. I threw him out. In fact I think the great James Patterson, who's a member of Mar-a-Lago, made a statement yesterday, that many years ago I threw him out. I'm not a fan of Jeffrey Epstein," he said.
Hmmm...Just saying. Epstein was friends with LOTS of people in power. To single out Clinton is plain stupid when you could easily use the same arguments for the Royal family, Trump, and scores of others. The man most likely had dirt on lots of folks. "

I agree 100 percent. This is a nonevent that will be missed after about a week unless people keep talking about it. Just like a mass shooter, mention the name once, then do not do it again. It will stop this kind of crap. Most people do not realize that the NFL players pretty much stopped "kneeling" last year. There were like one or two in the first week and they were not even publicized too much. What got the kneeling going again, IMO, was when Trump in a rally (in GA?) brought the issue up like it was a huge problem. So, of course, that got the players energized again.

The NFL at the times also formulating a policy where they cannot kneel or protest (like the NBA has). And for the union minded folks, you should appreciate that good and bad comes from collective bargaining. The NFL by itself could not impose a restriction on "kneeling" or protests" without the players association agreement. "

" This is my current info on how the US Gubermint supports US athletes that compete internationally: They do not.

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) supporting American athletes is one of the only national committees in the world that does not receive any financial assistance from its government. It is a non-profit, 501(c)3, organization and is funded primary through sponsorships and licensing. Because the international sponsors are primarily American companies and U.S. broadcast rights generate more revenue than other media markets, the USOC receives a larger share of funding than the other national committees.
Uness something has changed, the US gubermint, and people in the gubermint can voice their opinion about how athletes voice their opinions. Both are exercising 1A rights. But if the US gubermint does not want to support the athletes, yet reap the benefits "national pride, bragging rights" then they are not in a position to complain.

Let the governing bodies for the sport handle it. "

I would hardly call a member of the US Fencing team a sports "god". And as already stated, I think if you are representing yourself as a "US" team, you can save your opinions for another time. Then again, a couple of points. One is that (at least my understanding) is that these athletes get little or zero money from the US gubermint. The second is, and sorry to sound like a broken record, but why on earth are folks more upset about an unknown person kneeling for the National Anthem when we have a POTUS and other politicians that are not living up to their obligation to protect the 2A?

This guy is a blip on the news radar unless Trump chimes in which will make it an even bigger issue. Last I saw, this guy is not in a position of power to affect any change. Folks get their collective undies in a wad over something like this but gloss over politicians and POTUS that support Red FLag laws, bump stock bans, suppressor bans. And FWIW: I am not a "conspiracy" guy. It is not uncommon for someone that has lost everything and is in jail for murder, sex charges, and other crimes to kill themselves. They are more likely not "impromptu" suicides. By that I mean they all of a sudden decide to kill themselves. Most have planned this because they need to plan a suicide while in prison.

It is not "coincidental" that suicide would happen when the guards are not looking. It would happen ONLY at that time because it is the only oppurtunity they have. "

I am here to tell ya that it is more than just about guns and gun violence and healthcare that will turn the great state of Texas Blue. Until we get a Republican or other candidate to stop messing with our heads, then I will not vote and nor will some others I know. If Ghost was in Texas that would be another vote lost to the Republicans next election as well.

Point is that "Bump Stock" Trump needs to stop playing both sides and cherish the 2A as we do. I know of at least 30 people in my area and running club that will not vote for BST again since he let us down the first time.

And yes, blame me and those like me if the state goes Blue. But do not forget the reason why. I was taught to not to lie and deceive people. I can't vote for anyone that does, even if the lessor of two evils.

Losing Texas, if it does happen, will be a big blow to BST's relection campaign, not to mention what i does in Congress if the seats switch. "

Female Runner Tackles Alleged Flasher on Massachusetts Running Path

Massachusetts State Police are on the lookout for a man who reportedly flashed a woman while she was jogging on a public trail.

“It was not his lucky day, because I just decided it was not going to happen,” the woman, who said she was a former member of the Israeli military, told the local ABC affiliate afterward. “I decided to chase him down.”

Police say that the woman was able to tackle the suspect to ground. She asked passersby for help, but no one stepped forward.
So many things to say about this one.

1: Chasing down a flasher might not be the wisest choice one can make. I am not saying to not try it. Just thinking of all the possibilities that could go wrong. The ole risk vs gain thing.

2: My MIL said "she was in the the Isreali Army so she is well trained. She might or might not be. She could have been a supply sergeant. It still does not negate #1 above. She was unarmed. This guy could have been armed.

3: The passerby's should be put in jail for not stopping and helping. I jest of course. But they are a pitiful lot of souls.

4: Why would anyone live in MA anyway "

And ya know what? After seeing FOX and CNN this morning and getting caught up on Facebook, I realized my "I give a hoot" threshold went way up. I really do not care about politics in America anymore. Nor do I care about the plight of the neo-Nazi, not the LGBTQRTY community. I can care less about what any politician says since we all know they only tell us what we want in a way we want it.

I am just going to keep leading a simple life, pray to my God, never give up my guns, keep running, try not to judge others, mind my own business, and give up pork.

A 70-year-old man found dead in the Los Angeles River on Thursday had been disqualified last week after appearing to set a new record for his age group in the city’s March marathon.

Frank Meza, a retired physician who had denied the cheating accusations, died Thursday after telling his wife he was going for a run.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the athletic-wear company delivered the sneakers to retailers, but asked stores to return them to Nike after the company received a complaint from former NFL star Colin Kaepernick. The Journal indicated Kaepernick said he and others found the shoe offensive.

Siam created the thread Florida woman arrested after turning in estranged husband's gun a day after he tried to run her over.
" Well, all I can say is this:

1. One should not have guns taken from them by anyone (wife, gubermint) until they are convicted of something and serving time in jail. Being accused of domestic assault and not yet convicted, means no one should be taking your stuff. Guy might be a dirt bag, who knows. We need to let the courts figure it out.

2. IMO she should be thrown in jail from the information in the article. She broke into his house/apartment.

Florida woman arrested after turning in estranged husband's gun a day after he tried to run her over

A Florida woman was reportedly arrested after taking firearms from her estranged husband’s home to turn in to police, a day after he allegedly tried to run over her.

Courtney Irby, 32, was arrested last Saturday and charged with one count of armed burglary after an arrest affidavit said she showed up to the Lakeland Police Department station with guns belonging to her husband, Joseph Irby, just one day after he was arrested on a domestic battery charge, WKMG reported.

According to police, Irby admitted to entering her husband’s apartment without permission and taking the guns to the station over fears he “wasn’t going to turn them in” himself.

Siam created the thread How many years in jail would Batman get under New York law?.
" This could have gone into the Law Enforcement sub-forum but I thought Off Topic and humor would be best. The guy that does these videos is hillarious. He has done videos on things like how much money in lawsuits would Willy Wonka need to pay in Civil Damages and how many years in jail how would serve for crimes committed in "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". He did an analysis of how accurate "My Cousin Vinny" is vis a vis courtroom accuracy. He also did one for the Star Trek Next Generation episode "Measure of a Man".

In this video he uses New York law (since Gotham City is really kinda like NYC) to explain how many years in jail the Joker and Batman would get. Not counting the hacking charges, Batman would get almost 200 years in jail.

Siam created the thread We had to cut our trip to Houston short: AC went out in our house.
" First, thanks to all with the recommendations on where to eat in Houston. Unfortunately, we had to cut our vacation short. I can monitor our home while we are away and our AC went out. We have two cats in the house and a person that was going to check on them every couple of days.

Anyway, we ended up driving back last night.

I know lots of folks do not like the idea of having anything tied to the internet, but sometimes it is a good thing. Knowing if your AC is out in the summer or if the heating goes out in the winter is an important thing.

Anyway, we did make it to the Space Center in Houston (worth the trip), the Aquarium in Houston (was a waste of time and money), and ate at the Lighthouse Buffet at Kemah Boardwalk (AWESOME buffet!!!!) We also got to see the Museum of Fine Arts nd they had a Van Gogh exhibit which was really cool. The Museum of Natural Science was a good visit as well.

Overall, not bad for 2 days. Except for the Aquarium, it was fun. We will go back in July for a soccer game, Real Madrid is playing and we will take in an Astros game. "

Siam created the thread Keep your Situational Awareness and still listen to music, phone, podcast.
" I put this in the General Firearms section instead of off-topic because it has more to do with SA and self-defense than running

The spouse and I went to our local running store to get some new shoes for her and shorts for me. I have been curious about how well Bone Conductive Headphones work and they had a setup to try them out. I was honestly blown away by the quality and fidelity of the sound that you could hear.

Not only was it a great sound, you can hear all of the sounds around you since they do not go in your ears but are pressed against your bone. Point is, if you have a need or want to listen to music, your phone, podcasts, whatever, and want to make sure you can hear the sounds around you, this might be an option.

Personally, I like to blast my music into my ears so for me, not a need. But lots of folks like to run, walk the dog, play golf while having ear buds in but want to be able to hear what is around them.

Just food for thought.

Siam created the thread What is your litmus test for the RTKBA's?.
" Someone asked me this once in another thread which has definitely gone off topic.

You can't discriminate between WMD and bump stocks? Perhaps therein lies the problem.
This was my answer to that (edited for this thread)

And to answer your question about distinguishing between WMD's and bump stocks..nope, I do not really see a difference and here is why. Quite simply, anyone sitting in the Presidents office will decide what they think is appropriate for me to own, buy, carry for my personal defense. If some POTUS thinks bump stocks should be banned, which is at the total end of the spectrum from WMD's...what stops such a person from declaring anything in the middle deemed necessary to be banned.
That IS the problem when we think it is OK for a person or government to decide what a person wants. There is enough stuff in a Walmart or Home Depot where someone can buy stuff and design a weapon that can cause mass destruction. It might not fit the definition of WMD, but being able to make something to kill 20 people or more is definitely more of a threat than a potential use of a bump stock..

What is your personal litmus test of what should be banned under law and what you consider NOT an infringement. "

Siam created the thread The human body is amazing: runner shooting for sub 2 hour marathon.
" Kipchoge targets London for attempt at sub 2-hour marathon

Just to put this in perspective, this guy holds the world record right now on a certified course/race 2 hr 1 min 39 sec (4 min 38 sec per mile). He attempted to run sub 2 hours a couple of years ago with pacers, a flat track and no wind. And missed it by 25 seconds.

To run sub 2 hours, one would need to basically be sprinting a 100 yard dash in just a tad under 16 seconds continuously for 26.2 miles.

Training is one thing, but genetics obviously a major factor here

I am hoping to run sub 3 hours in Nov or Dec this year and I would be happy with that being 55 years old "

Siam created the thread Felon and GCA 1968: Actress cries as she pleads guilty in college admissions scandal.
" Actress Felicity Huffman cries as she pleads guilty in college admissions scandal

1: This is the correct forum, (not current events) because it is about gun rights
2: This is not about a Hollywood star that might or not own firearms or her thoughts about them, it is about being a felon and no longer having the right to bear arms.

When she appeared in court in Boston, prosecutors recommended a sentence of four months prison time for the "Desperate Housewives" TV star for her role in the college admissions scandal. They also suggested a $20,000 fine and 12 months of supervised release for the charge, which is a felony.
Unless one has not been following the news, a bunch of rich folks basically paid a guy to get their kids into "prestigious" colleges. They are now being held accountable, which they should be. They will also have been convicted of a felony or plead guilty to a felony which means that they can no longer purchase or own firearms.

This a great example of why the Gun Control Act of 1968 needs to be repealed.

Totally stupid that these folks cannot bear arms after they serve their sentences. "

Siam created the thread Prayers for my Sister, her husband and family.

He went nuts over the weekend and tried to kill himself. When the LE showed up he wanted the LE to shoot him. He is currently in a physiatrist facility being evaluated.

My sister has been totally stressed in the last 5 years with his declining health and his unwillingness to help himself. Don't get me wrong, he has been a great husband and father to his kids. I think at this point in his life he realized HE screwed up and now wants to end it.

My concern and prayers for him are that the idiots in the psych ward will believe him when he says he is OK and they let him go home and he will kill himself.

Prayers requested and thanks for your time "

Odds that she was watching that episode at the same time I was watching my show comes to 1:1872 (78 episodes of Justified, 24 for HW:FF).

That is not counting that she was actually watching Justified at all at the same time which would obviously make it even less probable.

Sports teams dump Kate Smith's 'God Bless America' because of her racist songs

Just to be clear, nobody is not stopping playing "God Bless America", they are just not using her rendition.

"We have recently become aware that several songs performed by Kate Smith contain offensive lyrics that do not reflect our values as an organization," the Flyers said in a statement to CNN.
"As we continue to look into this serious matter, we are removing Kate Smith's recording of 'God Bless America' from our library and covering up the statue that stands outside of our arena."
The Yankees said the team also was no longer playing Smith's iconic 1939 version of the song because she sang at least two songs during the 1930s that are now considered racist.
"Why Darkies are Born"

"Someone had to pick the cotton,
Someone had to plant the corn,
Someone had to slave and be able to sing,
That's why darkies were born"
Some have said when she sang the songs it was satire and was to oppose racism, others take a view she thought it was funny. I have no clue.

Siam created the thread Canadian police are looking for the suspect that shot a woman with a crossbow.
" Canadian police are looking for the suspect who posed as a deliveryman and shot a woman with a crossbow

I thought this was new. It is an updated story from Nov 2018. A guy shows up and shoots her with a crossbow. The noteworthy thing is that the Canadian police are now releasing the video to have people help identify the BG. This happened 5 months ago.

I get it that the police might keep info away from the public so as not to spook the BG. But after 5 months I wonder how useful this will be.

A woman will be in recovery for the rest of her life after someone posing as a delivery person shot her point-blank with a crossbow.

The attack, which is being investigated as an attempted murder, occurred in November in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. This week, police released video footage of the suspect at the victim's door in the hope that the person could be identified.
Emergency services responding to a Mississauga residence on November 7, found a 44-year-old woman suffering from life-threatening injuries and transported her to a hospital, police said in a news release Monday.
Investigators have since determined the victim answered her front door and was met with a person holding a large box. After a brief conversation, the suspect shot the woman in the chest using a crossbow that was concealed in the box. The suspect then fled to a dark-colored pickup truck, authorities said.

" A gun in a diaper bag went off, injuring dad and daughter. Now the dad has died

Prayers for the family. A very sad day, and one that is preventable. Always be aware of where your firearm is. I am glad the baby will be OK.

A man who accidentally shot himself while changing his daughter's diaper in a vehicle in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, has died, police said.

Timothy Roshun Smith was shot in the leg and chest, and his daughter's leg was injured, when a loaded gun in a diaper bag went off Saturday outside a Chuck E Cheese's.
The 22-year-old man died Monday, said Capt. Johnny Evans of the Vestavia Hills Police Department. The girl is expected to make a full recovery, Evans said.
Smith was in the back seat of a vehicle Saturday outside the pizza restaurant, changing the girl's diaper. The gun went off as he picked up or reached inside a diaper bag on the floorboard, Evans said after the incident.
After the gun went off, the bullet traveled through Smith's leg and then the child's leg before lodging in the man's chest, Evans said.

Chaos at Walmart as woman performs karate, son exposes himself, dog steals food

Chaos descended on a Wisconsin Walmart store Wednesday night after a karate-performing mother, her naked son, and their belligerent dog shoplifted and ran amok in the store.
After being told to leave the store, the woman began showing off her karate moves in the parking lot to fend off police officers.

The dog tried to flee the crime scene, albeit unsuccessfully, with a box of Jiffy Cornbread Muffin Mix in his mouth.

After a brief fight with the officers, Smith was arrested. As a last-ditch attempt, she tried to kick a window out of a police car.

Her raucous son, meanwhile, was getting fully naked and began exposing himself to other customers at the store. He then tried to cover himself with new clothes from the store without intending to pay for them, police said.

Siam created the thread Funny:Interesting law/regulation for Yosemite Park.
" I was watching a rock climbing documentary and they brought up an interesting thing.

One thing I never considered is that some solo/free climbers climb with a BASE parachute in case they fall. So, if you have a legal permit to climb El Capitan but fall and deploy your chute, then you broke the law because BASE jumping without a permit is illegal. If landed without a parachute and got killed he would be OK legally

Reminds me of the dialogue in Judge Dredd:

Judge Dredd: And you haven't even been out of jail for 24 hours. He's habitual, Hershey. An automatic five year sentence. How do you plead?
Herman Ferguson: Not guilty?
Judge Dredd: I knew you'd say that.
Ferguson: Five years?! No! No! I had no choice! They were killing each other in there.
Judge Dredd: You could have gone out the window.
Ferguson: Forty floors? It would have been suicide!
Judge Dredd: Maybe, but it's legal.

Boys rescued from Thai cave were sedated with ketamine

According to details of the rescue released in a medical journal Thursday, the boys were given unspecified doses of ketamine, also known as party drug Special K, by the rescue divers as they were taken out of Tham Luang cave.
Reports at the time had suggested that the children, who had been trapped for two weeks, were sedated during the operation, but officials gave few details.
"We had to use the means that could keep the children not to be panicky while we were carrying them out," Thai Navy SEAL commander Rear Adm. Arpakorn Yookongkaew told CNN shortly after the rescue. "Most importantly, they are alive and safe."
The link in the article is for the New England Journal of Medicine writeup. In case you do not subscribe to NEJM here are some interesting things about the rescue and the preplanning for it from a medical POV.

The Tham Luang cave rescue mission to save 12 boys and their soccer coach1,2 provided an important experience base for the prehospital care of patients with hypothermia who had been anesthetized before their arrival at the field hospital. With impending monsoon rains and concerns about falling oxygen levels in the cave, a plan to urgently extricate the patients was developed. The plan involved the use of ketamine-based anesthesia and a positive-pressure full-face mask (supplying 80% oxygen); the boys were swum out of the cave wearing poorly fitting wet suits in cold water.
The after-action review on day 1 identified hypothermia and inefficient team coordination as the critical components, and the Thailand Cave Rescue Protocol, which addressed airway, breathing, circulation, and hypothermia management (ABC+H), was developed. Resuscitation roles (ABC) were assigned to an anesthesiologist, respirologist, and pediatric cardiologist, respectively. The hypothermia management was formalized and assigned to the anesthesiologist. The accuracy of core temperature measurement was improved with the use of tympanic membrane temperature monitoring, which was performed every 5 minutes until a temperature of 35.0°C was observed for at least four readings. Ketamine, a vasoconstrictor that impairs shivering, is associated with smaller drops in core temperature and is a good choice for patients at risk for hypothermia.

Siam created the thread Spring breakers fight off would-be robbers and take their gun.
" Good for them and I am glad none of the kids were hurt. I think there are lots of learning lessons in this video

The primary one is that they did not consider there was a second robber. Lots of times it looked like the gunman could have shot the kids. I think that there was something wrong with the gun (not loaded) or more likely the gunman was overwhelmed and might not have had the stomach to actually shoot someone.

" Assuming everything is true in the article, the man should be left alone. You do not send someone back to jail if you were the one that let him out.

A man walked out of prison 13 years ago thinking he was free. The feds say he owes 16 months

Demetrius Anderson walked out of a Connecticut state prison in 2006 thinking he was ready to leave behind his criminal past and build a new life as an upstanding citizen.

The Philadelphia native stayed in Connecticut and stayed out of trouble. He has two jobs, lives in a nice apartment and belongs to a church.
But last week, eight US Marshals came to his home. He was certain they were after the wrong person. He hadn't committed a crime in more than 13 years. They insisted he come with them to court because he still had a 16-month federal sentence to serve for crimes he committed in Philadelphia.
Anderson thought his state sentence was concurrent to his federal one. And when he got out of prison early, there were no federal officials to transfer him to another facility.
He went out and got a job, reported to his parole officer, and lived a crime-free life.
But during an internal audit, federal marshals reportedly discovered Anderson never served prison time for his federal charge. They asked a Pennsylvania judge to issue a warrant for his detention.

Siam created the thread Unsung hero of World War II: Jacques Stosskopf.
" Most people, even people in France might not know if this man. I ran across his name while researching about WWII. I can't imagine the pain and suffering he and his family went through.

Jacques Stosskopf was a Frenchman who became a collaborator with the Germans. Or so it seemed. He built up trust with the Germans and was achieved the posting of deputy director of naval construction at the German-held Lorient U-boat arsenal. In this role he was despised and hated by the workers there. Only a handful of people in the resistance knew that he was providing valuable information to the allies on U-boat operations.

Imagine, living a lie and being hated while risking your life and being loyal to your country the whole time.

He was eventually found out, tortured and executed.

Siam created the thread Republicans’ day of reckoning on Trump is coming.
" An interesting opinion piece from FOX

Republicans’ day of reckoning on Trump is coming

Twelve Senate Republicans stopped Donald Trump from invoking a national emergency to pay for a wall on the southern border last Friday…three times as many senators than needed to pass it. That’s the good news. The bad news? Even more Republicans will be needed to override Trump’s veto. What’s worse is the fact that if more Republicans don’t join Democrats in overriding this veto they will provide Trump even more power when he has a history of not acting in the best interest of our country.
Now, it is even more important to override Trump’s veto in light of his comments last week, about the use of force at his disposal. He said in an interview with Breitbart “I can tell you I have the support of the police, the support of the military, the support of the Bikers for Trump — I have the tough people, but they don’t play it tough — until they go to a certain point, and then it would be very bad, very bad.”

" At least 49 dead in 'terrorist' shootings at 2 New Zealand mosques, 4 nabbed, IEDs found

One person has been charged in connection with a “well-planned” terrorist attack that killed 49 people and injured dozens more in two mosques in New Zealand on Friday, authorities said.

The New Zealand police said four people -- three men and one woman -- were in custody in connection with the attack. Investigators later defused a number of improvised explosive devices that were found inside vehicles. Prime Minister Jacinda Arden described the suspects as one principal, two associates and one person not directly connected to the attacks. She said the suspects were not on any security watch lists.
Terrorism conducted by any group against another group is always wrong.

Prayers to the families and victims. "

Sex outside of marriage may soon be legal in Utah

“What is legally is often far below what is morally right,” said state Republican Rep. Kevin Stratton, who objected to the bill. “And I recognize our laws are not strong enough to rule an immoral people.”
This is the part that really surpised me. I assumed that this law was an anachronism, and had been on the books for 100 year or more.

Sex between those unmarried was criminalized in 1973. The bill that passed Tuesday was part of the legislature’s efforts to clean up its criminal code, removing unenforceable laws from the books, state Republican Rep. Paul Ray told FOX13.

Florida man mistakenly arrested in sex spa case plans to sue sheriff, says arrest upended his life

A husband and father of two is working to clear his name after he was erroneously arrested as part of the ongoing investigation into a widespread sex trafficking ring at several massage parlors in South Florida.
Investigators initially connected him to the case via a blue, four-door Porsche that was parked near the spa, TCPalm reported.
Authorities said the blue Porsche actually belonged to a woman with the same last name and was also co-registered to a man not named Patel.
While searching driver's license photos of men named Patel in Martin County, investigators found Sandipkumar Patel. They said his license photo matched the look of a man seen on video the police had shot at the spa.

HOA threatens resident with fine after car leaves unusual shape in snow

A homeowner’s association (HOA) in Tennessee threatened to fine a resident $100 after her car left a phallix-shaped image in the condo’s parking lot following a light dusting of snow, a report said Tuesday.
The board claimed to have photographic evidence sent in by a resident who was concerned about the wellbeing of children, the outlet reported. The photo it sent left Kathryn in stitches: a snowy parking space with a blob of cleared asphalt that could be construed as male genatalia.

Siam created the thread Things I never knew about "Uncle Fester" from "The Addams Family".
" I was reading about Charlie Chaplin last night and dovetailed into reading about the actor that played the kid in the movie "The Kid". I would have never guessed it was Uncle Fester! I guess it just flew under my radar. So I read about Jackie Coogan. Pretty interesting.

The law they made to protect child actors assets from being stolen by the parents is named after him (Coogan Bill).

He volunteered to be a glider pilot during WW II. Not only was that dangerous, he was assigned to the Burma campaign. Thank you sir for your service and RIP.

And who would have thought that he was married to Betty Grable!

So there you have it, a brief history about Uncle Fester

Siam created the thread Chicago police blast Jussie Smollett 'phony attack': 'Bogus police reports cause real harm'.

Chicago police blast Jussie Smollett 'phony attack': 'Bogus police reports cause real harm'

"I'm left hanging my head and asking why," a visibly upset Johnson told reporters. "Why would anyone, especially an African-American man, use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations? How could someone look at the hatred and suffering associated with that symbol...how can an individual who has been embraced by the city of Chicago turn around and slap everyone in this city by making this false claim?"
Smollett told police he was attacked by two masked men as he was walking home from a Subway sandwich shop at around 2 a.m on Jan. 29. The actor, who is black and gay, said the masked men beat him, made derogatory comments and yelled "This is MAGA country" — an apparent reference to President Donald Trump's campaign slogan, "Make America Great Again" — before fleeing.
Johnson said police found the "check that [Smollett] used to pay [two brothers]" to fake the beating, adding he paid them $3,500 "for the two of them in total, and then $500 upon return."

South Carolina teacher sees student, 7, riding bike on highway, helps him save dad

Keller Sutherland was driving home when she noticed other cars zipping past a young boy riding a bike down U.S. 25, the teacher said in a video posted to the Greenville County School’s Facebook. She recognized the boy as Cameron, a 7-year-old former student. She immediately turned her car around and asked the boy what was going on.
Cameron told her that his diabetic father had collapsed at his house. He said he first tried to call 911, but he didn’t know the passcode to his father’s locked cell phone. He then tried the neighbors, but no one was home. His last recourse was to pedal five miles to his grandmother’s house.
I thought all cell phones were require to be able to dial 911, even if the phone is locked. I also thought that all cell phones, even if thier is a plan or not has to be able to dial 911. I wonder if the kid got confused. Either way, he is 7 and did a great job.

I did check our phones and you can dial 911 (or emergency number) even if locked. "
