When I was done--about halfway through--I waved my white napkin in the air and shouted, "I surrender!" Broke up the bar. Bar keep shoved a take-home box inf ront of me and said he'd never seen that one before.

" Getting back to my gummy bolt issue.

It was full of brownish, syrupy goop. The only "oiling" I ever do to a firing pin assembly is a light wipe down with a oiled rag and then wiped clean with a clean rag. But there was a lot of goop.

I had swapped to using Breakfree CLP on this rifle a while back, ran some through the bore and followed up with clean patches. Never left the rifle "oily." But I do have a rod heater in my safe, and I am wondering if that did not allow the CLP residue to run down the bore and/or action and flow onto the bolt face and therefore into the inside of the bolt. I really don't know where else it may have come from.

I think I will place some CLP in a small bowl and set it in the safe to see it it turns into the same goop I found inside the bolt.My inquiring mind wants to know.

And the 788 was back to business as usual at the range today. "

I'm mean, really, how hard is it to understand where OC is legal in FL and when it is not. Ignorance of the law is no excuse--not even for Palm Beach's chief of police and his minions. "

That was back when I was young and impulsive.
I bought my 788 back in '80. It was much better than my 30-06 for blasting ground squirrels and rock chucks. I was amazed how accurate that inexpensive rifle was. They made the 788 in .223 for one year only, and I am glad I snagged one. My only regret is never buying extra mags for it. If I lose my one and only mag, I'm neck deep in the doo. "

OldVet created the thread OldVet has another "D'oh!" moment..
" Late Thursday night, because the weather reporters said we'd have great weather on Friday, I decided to make a run to the rifle range in the morning and run some old .223 loads through my beloved Rem. 788 and see how they read on my Magnetospeed Sporter chronograph. A last minute decision as I've been too busy with life to get out shooting since July.

I tossed a few boxes of reloads in my range bag, pulled the 788 out of the safe where it's been in hiding for over a year, and set everything in the living room for an early departure. Naturally I stayed up until one AM, so early departure was about 9:30 AM. Of course, it was pouring rain when I woke at 9:00. Forty-five minutes later I arrived at the range, pay my fee, and set up at my station.

First up was a few 52-grain Speer HPs with IMR-4198. The range was operating at only 50 yards because rain had flooded the 100-yard line. No big deal as I was only testing out the Magnetospeed velocities and range was irrelevant. Lined up the cross hairs and pulled the trigger.

Click...

Cripes. I had visions of no-powder cases running through my head . . . again. Pulled the round and it had a light primer strike. Just because I'm a slow learner, I tried twice more with the same results. Even the click of the firing pin sounded dull.

I pulled the bolt out and the RO found a pin punch thin enough to unscrew the firing pin assembly from the bolt. Humm. Kind of a mess inside. I tried a few shots of Remoil to loosen up the works and wiped it all down and tried again. Still a muffled click.

Just because I am who I am, I switched to a different load, 55-grain Hornady FMJBTs with 19.5 grains of 4198. Out of 4 tries, one round fired, the rest still had light strikes. To avoid further frustration (and nobody likes a frustrated curmudgeon, including me), I packed up and headed home.

Back at the homestead, I disassembled the bolt again, swabbed the inside of the bolt with a Hoppes-soaked mop and sprayed about 1/4 of a can of Brakeclean on the firing pin assembly. A lot of old, brown gunk washed out. A quick dry fire produced a sharp Snap! this time.

Like I said before, I hadn't shot the rifle in over a year, and I don't think I'd broken down the bolt in over 25 years. I don't oil the firing pin and bolt chamber, but I guess over time enough migrated into it that sitting for so ling just let it gum up. Even old guns hiding in the safe need a little TLC too.

The one round that fired read 2841 fps for those interested. A bit lower than what I would have expected, but I can't judge it on one shot. "

" Twelve years after being told I needed knee replacement, it is finally on the calendar for December. Both knees, three days apart. I want it over and done with. Kind of sucks to be during that time frame, was hoping for early Nov., but it is what it is.

All the docs I saw said not until I lost weight. Now I've done that, so it's full speed ahead. I know it will be a tough recovery, but hopefully mobility will be restored enough to increase my level of physical activity. Let the games begin. "

OldVet created the thread Hurricane prep got boring, sooo.
" Ode to the Unpublished Writer

Here I sit amid stacks of papers.
Wrote a book, alas no takers.
Mailed out envelopes in sets of three,
Enclosed query, synopsis, and SASE.

Read my novel, I plea and plea.
Each one replies, “Not for me.”
I rewrite my hook, edit each line.
Still no reward for all my time.

Send out queries, often and more.
Same old answer as before.
I type and peck, key after key.
Soon the novels number three.

Send new queries in groups of ten.
Now they respond, “You again?”
I write of combat, of war and hell.
Methinks the subject will not sell.

So atop my throne, I work on diction,
And hope it helps to sell my fiction.
My business finished, the roll’s no more,
No big deal--rip out pages one through four. "

Filled three gas cans this morning, will fill the others later.
Filled the truck. Lines at the stations already.
Grabbed some cash.
Will test run the generator this afternoon.
Yard cleanup and mowing later today before it gets too wet.
Grocery run this evening.
Storm panels up probably Friday if it looks like it might get serious. Lot of work for one old man.
Batten down the hatches Fri.

Attachment 24856Attachment 24857

The car is virtually identical to the one I owned in high school. I talked to the guy who owned it, and he said the car was the exact one he drove in HD and never sold it. He said he pulled the auto tranny and 389 six-pack out and installed a 455 and four-speed tranny during its frame-off restoration. Definitely not for sale...

Personally I would have stuck with the 389 six-pack since it's not really a drag car, but the '64 automatic wasn't much in the way of a muscle car. Mine had a custom grill and the hood scoops extended, but otherwise the same. "

OldVet created the thread Neck turning....
" I'll say upfront that I have turned case necks before, but that when was converting .30-30 cases to .30 Herrett. That was only for 50 or so cases and back in the early '80s. Since then, I never found a need to turn case necks, and I hadn't even seen my neck-turning setup for nearly 30 years.

When I dove into this 6mm Mongoose caliber, a wildcat variation of the .223/5.56 case, it was mentioned that care needed to be taken to ensure the converted case neck diameter was under .269" to allow expansion when fired. Lapua cases were mentions as would require turning. I'm a fan of military brass, and as luck would have it, Lake City brass seemed to be the go-to brand.

Due to a mistake on my part, I recently ordered 200 "NATO" mixed cases instead of "LC" cases. The batch consisted of WCC and TAA head stamps. TAA is Taiwanese contract brass. It looked to be of decent quality, so I proceeded with converting it. After resizing a dozen or so, I noticed a light ridge on the neck where the /5.56 neck used to be. A quick check with a caliper showed the necks to be right at .268 - .269, closer to the max than I was comfortable.

That left me with two options: Toss the TAA cases or turn the necks. I wasn't about to toss over 100 cases. Fortunately, I found my neck-turning parts but had to set it up. A bit of trial and error work and I had my 45-year-old Herter's case trimmer and neck turner shaving brass!

All of the TAA brass pretty much shaved the necks from the neck mouth to the shoulder junction. It might skip a spot here and there where the neck was thinner, but overall all the TAA brass now has nice, shiny necks of a consistent thickness of about .010" and an outside diameter of .264".

The WCC brass was another story. Most of it required slight shaving right at the shoulder junction, but the forward half of the neck was very hit and miss, either the cutter not touching the brass or slightly shaving it. Clearly WCC brass does not have a consistent neck thickness.

Just for GPs, I'm going to check some of my other Mongoose cases, mainly LC and FC cases. I've never turned necks for accuracy purposes, so it will be interesting to see if I notice any effect. "

OldVet created the thread Pelosi's Plan.
" The Democrats are frothing at the mouth to impeach Trump for whatever reason they can imagine. Yet Pelosi still will not pull that trigger.

Why?

I think she is well aware that Americans have short attention spans, and if she began proceedings today, most of us would be long bored with it before the elections get into the serious battles. It would also create more distraction in the arduous Democratic nominee process. I think her hesitation is not fact or evidence driven, but timing driven. I say she'll start impeachment proceedings no sooner than six months before the elections when its effect will be greatest on the election outcome

That is all I have to say about that. "

OldVet created the thread One of those days....
" The Boss needed her military ID renewed because her Medicare is kicking in. The closest place is an AF base 1-1/2 drive away.

The base used to be Johnny on the spot taking care of retirees, but now you have to make an appointment online, go there and get processed, and THEN come back a few days later to pick up the card. Not very convenient if you don't live outside the gate. And to make it all the better, the online appointment system doesn't work...

A friend told me the Reserve unit will take walk-ins, so we drive there only to find out they are closed on Thursday! Grrrrrr. So we go to the base ID office, but it's fruitless.

Next option is another hour drive to Orlando NAS. Walk in and are told 1-1/2 to 2 hour wait. Fine... Twenty minutes later we walk out with the new ID in hand. Bless the USN!

Now it's nearly past lunch time, I've had one cup of coffee and NO breakfast. My mood was entering new territory. So I bought a new bumper sticker.

OldVet created the thread Something for you reloaders to kick around..
" I took a mix of rounds to the range today. Some were low-powder fireformers, others were with my hotter powders, both using CCI 450 primers.

Here's what happened. All was fine and dandy until I got to the last 20 rounds--450 primers firing BL-C(2) powder.

Round #11, pulled the trigger--click. WTH? Ejected a still-loaded round. Pulled the trigger again--click. Being a slow learner, I ejected that loaded round and tried a third time--with the same result.

All three misfired primers had solid firing pin strikes, and I mean good ones. So I'm thinking firing pin problem?

Pulled the BCG and firing pin, and other than the typical soot, there was nothing wrong with the firing pin. Pulled it all back together and loaded the next round in the magazine. Click. The next one, Click. Both with solid strikes.

Repeat strikes on two of the faulty rounds do nothing.

I uniform the flash holes and primer pockets on all my cases, hand prime them and feel that the primers are below flush, so high primers are not the case.

I haven't had a bad primer since 1976 when I had two from the same pack. And I can actually understand five random duds in a bad batch of primers, but five in a row and all go bang after that?

I'm going to give the rifle a good cleaning just to eliminate that, and break down those 5 rounds and pop the primers out for inspection. Don't know what else to do. I don't think a call to CCI is warranted yet, but if any more fail, I certainly will.

At this point I have 5 rounds left, so I load them in the magazine and all five go bang as normal. "

OldVet created the thread MagnetoSpeed Sporter Chrongraph?.
" Load work ups for my 6mm Mongoose have me looking into chronographs, something I've never used before. The MagnetoSpeed Sport chrony caught my eye, not only because of the price, but that it is barrel mounted and doesn't require setting up in front of the firing line. If I'm going to use ballistic tables, it helps to have an accurate bullet velocity (Duh!). It is also very compact, easily fitting into the day backpack I use for a range bag.

Reviews I've read are good, although I noted one reviewer said it would change the POI but not group size. That's not a real concern for me as I wouldn't be using it at ranges beyond 100 yards.

Anyone use one or have insight as to their accuracy?

OldVet created the thread Scopes....
" I'm looking into replacing the old 4X scope I'm using on my Mongoose AR with something of a higher power. I have limitations: the longest range available is 200 yards, hiking 100 yards on these knees is a pain (Hoping to get them replaced in Nov.), and I'm a cheapskate.

Because the Mongoose is essentially a paper-punching range toy only, I'm looking at something in the 4x12 or 4x16 range. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, just useable. BDCs don't make me all giddy, giant "tactical" knobs don't interest me, and a 3x9 Bushnell has always done the job out to 300+ yards for me.

I've looked into Vortex, Primary Arms, Nikon, and a few others. I seriously doubt I'll invest more than $300, so don't say, "Get this $2000 scope!"

So what suggestions/experiences might some of you have in that range that may serve my purposes? "

There is a cornucopia of reasons it is failing. The expense, the "Stages," the orchestrated yellow flags, turning its nose up at its roots, etc. NASCAR needs to give up entertaining and get back to racing. Smaller tracks are exciting, dirt tracks would be better. "
