Personal Defense Forum Rules

We really appreciate you being part of PersonalDefenseForum and we hope you will continue to help us to make this site the best personal defense and concealed weapons carry community on the internet. At PDF we pride ourselves on having a friendly and smooth running site.

Our rules were written in a way that should make them easy to understand and simple to follow. Remaining civil and avoiding personal attacks and trolling is some of the best advice we can offer our members in an effort to help them remain in alignment with the forum rules.

In order to keep the forums running well and to prevent issues from arising, we ask that each of you to take a few minute to read and familiarize yourselves with our "Forum Rules." These rules are designed to reduce the amount of discord that seems to be ever present on so many other forums. This discord detracts from the purpose and value of our forum, so we strive to create a friendly atmosphere that encourages our members to take pride in their forum community by engaging in civil discussions with other members of this community.

We created this forum so that those of us who take responsibility for our own personal defense would have a resource available to us where we can gain knowledge and share our experiences in a friendly environment that we would enjoy coming to every day.

Every member is expected to follow forum rules when participating. When you become a member at PersonalDefenseForum, you agree to abide by these rules. Wherever these rules are open to interpretation, the forum staff will make their decisions based on the staff's interpretation of the rules. Should you have any questions regarding these rules, please feel free to contact any of the forum staff and we will be happy to provide you with answers to your questions.

General Rules:

1. Threads and posts should be related to the individual sub-forum's focus and the thread's title must clearly communicate the topic for discussion. Multiple or repeated posting in order to increase your post count is not allowed. The posting of meaningless threads, thread hijacking, off-topic posts, one word (or short) nonsense posts, including off-site links, are not allowed.

This forum has a very distinct focus, and was created that way on purpose. Please keep your posts here on the topic of personal defense, the 2A, and associated gear and other topics such as: Personal Defense, Concealed Carry, Open Carry, Firearms, Holsters, Edged Weapons, Tactical Equipment, Training, Law Enforcement etc.

Some members may occasionally find that certain topics or even entire sub-forums are not to their liking and if you happen to find yourself in this situation, you may want to consider refraining from viewing these topics and areas of the forum and ignore them when they appear in the New Post list. Publicly grousing about the existence of legitimate discussion topics or entire sub-forums and/or complaining about these posts & topics showing up in the New Post list or What's New section will not be tolerated.

2. We ask that our members engage in civil debates and discussions about the topic at hand. Posts or Private Messages which are considered by the staff to be rude, insulting, or are personal attacks or are purposelessly inflammatory are not allowed. We also do not allow caliber wars, bashing open carry, trolling, stalking or flaming of any kind.

3. Please try to keep your language clean and family-friendly at all times. It is impossible for us to provide an exhaustive list of the more egregious curse words and offensive language that is not to be used on the forum. Most people are capable of figuring out for themselves which words and phrases shouldn't be posted on a family-friendly forum. When in doubt, it is most likely a wise choice to avoid using that particular word or phrase.

Creative language workarounds, such as, the use of special characters to replace some letters on otherwise prohibited language are not allowed. Use of the (censored) emoticon is allowed by replacing the entire word with the emoticon so if you want to play it safe and avoid issues, we suggest you use the censor emoticon.

We are a family-friendly forum and your posts, photos, memes and other contents of your post must remain in alignment with this rule. Repeated violations of this rule may result in your account being permanently closed.

NOTE: Links to off-site videos and materials that contain profanity or any other inappropriate language but is related to our focus at PDF are allowed so long as the following rules are adhered to: The video/material must be related to the forum's focus. (Strong Language) must be in the thread title and a conspicuous "strong language warning" must be posted above the link to satisfy those who are sensitive to this type of language. POST LINKS ONLY. NEVER EMBED THESE TYPES OF VIDEOS/MATERIALS IN YOUR POST. THIS ALLOWANCE IS ONLY FOR INFORMATION RELEVANT TO OUR FOCUS. Any other links will be subject to an infraction.

4. Females are one of the fastest growing segments of gun owners/carriers and we want to encourage them to join the PDF family so please be mindful of this when making your posts. Their experiences and unique perspectives are a valued asset to PDF. We serve both male and female members so we will not tolerate sexual innuendos or sexual harassment towards either gender.

5. We do not allow racial, ethnic, or religious slurs nor do we allow disparaging remarks about religion, race, creed, gender, sexual preference or national origin. Racism and hate speech, as well as, discussions about your sexual preference/alternative lifestyle/gender identity/abortion will not be tolerated. Violations of this rule may result in your account being permanently closed.

6. Spamming is not allowed. This includes using the forum email and Private Message system to spam other members. Any member receiving this type of PM or email, should immediately notify the forum staff. Spamming will result in your account being permanently closed.

Occasionally mentioning another forum or posting a link to a particular thread from another forum is allowed, but we discourage this practice as we find it much more beneficial when our members initiate an entirely new discussion on our site.

We do not allow either blatant advertising or disparaging remarks about other internet forums. Using this forum for the purposes of directing traffic from this site to your website, blog, Facebook page, etc. is not permitted. Violators of this rule will have their posts edited/deleted. Any repeated violations (including multiple violations of this rule in rapid succession) will result in the member's account being permanently closed.

7. At PDF we understand the nature of the types of discussions our community has and we strive to create an atmosphere where our members don't live in fear of receiving an infraction for the mere mention of the name of someone in politics, or for briefly touching upon a political topic, or for making an occasional brief political comment, that is pertinent to the discussion. Having said that, political discussions should be confined to the "Politics" sub-forum or the "Gun Rights & the Second Amendment" sub-forum. It is advisable to not engage in political discussions outside of the two previously mentioned sub-forums unless it is directly pertinent to the thread's original topic.

We do not allow anti-government rants, derogatory remarks, offensive slang or inflammatory labels attacking a political party affiliation or a political ideology.

At PDF we also understand that there is a lot of focus on religious aspects as it pertains to the topics we discuss here. As a result of this, there will be some discussions on PDF which will contain religious elements. These religious discussions must remain centered on the forum's focus. Any other religious discussions are not allowed. When making your posts, please be respectful of the beliefs of other forum members.

8. Our "Military & Law Enforcement" sub-forum is for discussing relevant topics in those areas. This sub-forum is not to be used to bash either of these organizations and we will not tolerate the bashing in any other areas of the forum.

9. We do not allow the discussion of illegal activities except in the reporting of the actions of others. Do not admit to breaking the law or committing any illegal activity even if it happened in your distant past. Using this site in any way to do something that is illegal in nature or can be considered the promoting of illegal activity, will result in your account being permanently closed.

10. Copyrighted material and Copying of News Articles - Unless the copyright holder provides written permission to do so, under no other circumstance is it allowed on PDF to copy an entire article from another internet source verbatim and post it here. The allowed format is to summarize the story in the Original Posters' (OP's) own words and to copy the first sentence or two (as long as they are in alignment with the forum rules) - and then provide a link to the original story AND state the authoring body. Failure to do so will result in the deletion of posted material. Copyrighted material is protected and must receive proper citation. A link to the copyrighted source in the relevant post is sufficient for proper citation.

While these rules cover most common situations, we cannot anticipate everything. Consequently we reserve the right to take any actions we deem appropriate to ensure these forums are not disrupted or abused in any way. Posts that are contrary to the rules and policies or to the mission of PersonalDefenseForum, or violate our community standards may be edited or deleted at our sole discretion. We are a private venture enabled by an all-volunteer staff. Forum Administrators and/or Moderators shall make the final decision on what does/does not violate community standards.

It should be noted that everything you write on PDF is done so in the public domain and as such, there is no "right to privacy" with regards to your writings. Once you make a statement here, it is almost the same as if you shouted it out on a street corner. It is in the public domain. Therefore, when one chooses to leave our forum or is banned (for violating the rules), requests to "delete all of your previous posts" will not be entertained. Threatening to sue will do no good as well, as you would have no legal basis to do so. If you are worried about the content of your posts, you shouldn't have made the posts to begin with.

Should you ever encounter a post or private message which you believe violates the forum rules, please report the post by clicking on the triangular icon below the post. When the message window opens up, briefly explain why you are reporting the post and then click "Send Report." Reporting a post is a confidential process and the author of the post being reported will never know which member or members chose to report the post.

When a post is reported, a discussion thread is created in the staff's area so that we can address the issue as a team. Please keep in mind that not every post that is reported arises to the level of a rules violation and sometimes the reported post does not require moderator intervention. When this occurs, the staff will usually contact everyone who reported the post to let them know the status of the reported post. If action is taken on a reported post, it is our policy to never discuss the details with anyone outside of the staff. We encourage all of our members to utilize the Report Post feature and we strongly discourage our members from responding to posts which they believe violate the forum rules.

If you receive a warning or an infraction and you wish to challenge the decision, click the triangular Report Post icon at the bottom of the Private Message you received notifying you of the warning/infraction. When the message window opens up, type a respectful message to the staff which will explain that you are challenging the decision and the reasons why you are challenging the decision. This will create a new discussion thread in the staff's area and we will review the incident along with the new information you provide in your defense. If you are unable to fit all of your defense in the Report Post message window please indicate that in your message and ask to be contacted via Private Message so that we may obtain the remainder of your defense. Once the staff has reached a decision, one of our team members will contact you via private message and inform you of our decision. Please note that this procedure is the only way to go about challenging a decision. Publicly grousing about infractions/warnings, the staff or how the forum is run, will not be tolerated and doing so will result in infractions being issued or your account being permanently closed.

Guidelines and Forum Restrictions:

Picture Posting

Members are allowed (and encouraged) to post on topic pictures. It is preferred that you upload them here to prevent broken links resulting when the website hosting the pictures moves or removes them, but linking is allowable. Linked graphics will sometimes drastically slow down the loading of a thread/post. Please consider this when posting pictures. Threads with broken picture links will have the links removed as we come across them.

When you post pictures, the software will automatically thumbnail them. Clicking on the thumbnail will expand the picture to full size. The purpose of thumbnails are so you don't have to load large images every time you visit the thread unless you specifically want to see them. It also speeds the loading of pages, saves bandwidth and prevents large pictures from distorting the size of the thread causing you to have to scroll horizontally. Most people don't want to see every picture, every time they visit a thread. Please don't repetitively post the same picture over and over again. Once really is enough.

Member Account

Each member is allowed one account. Multiple user account registrations for one individual are not permitted. We have tools designed to detect multiple accounts and, when discovered, we reserve the right to delete, revoke or merge any or all of these accounts, without further notice. Those using, or attempting to use, an anonymous proxy to either register or access this forum will have their accounts closed, without notice, warning or discussion. When an account is closed the IP address may be made public in service to protect other forums and forum members. IP address of posters is in the public domain.

As a family friendly forum, avatars must not be in poor taste, period. Avatars that are found to be in poor taste will be removed. A size restriction is set at 125x125 pixels, with a maximum size of 50k.

Signature Size Limits

All signatures may not exceed 150 characters. BB code is allowed, HTML code is not allowed. Graphics in your Signature Line Area must be SMALL in size and not distracting.

Links in Signatures

Linking to ONE commercial product/service related to our focus is allowable, provided it is not an affiliate program link. Multiple site links or promotional text for a commercial product or service is not allowed. Signatures must be kept low key.

Member's selling individual personal items (non-commercial) are allowed in the "Member Classifieds" forum once a member has made 25 or more posts. All thread titles should include the state where these items are located. Items listed here must not be listed for sale elsewhere or on the Internet, including auction sites or any other forums.

Advertising, for paid sponsors only, is allowed in the "Personal Defense Forum Sponsors" forum.

We do not allow advertising to be embedded within the forum topics, in fairness to our paid sponsors, who help keep this forum operating. Simply mentioning a related business in the course of a thread is in no way restricted as long as it is relevant to the thread and would not be considered obtrusive. No other advertising will be allowed within the forum and, when found, will be removed. Please PM or email 1MoreGoodGuy if you have any questions regarding this policy.

It is STRONGLY advised that PDF sponsors conduct discussions in their own sub-forum unless asked a question outside their respective jurisdiction. Sponsors control their own sub-forum and thus have complete latitude in moderating and starting threads. Any PDF sponsor has the latitude to defend/comment on their product under the appropriate PDF rules of conduct - in any of the PDF's forums rooms, should they feel the need to do so. PDF sponsors represent their company, their product and to some extent, PDF. Should their reputation be attacked on PDF by a member, please bring this matter to the attention of any one of PDF moderators rather than engaging the offending party. This is not a rule, rather a recommendation.

Member "Off Topic" Discussions forum

All topics and posts must be related to concealed carry, firearms, and other related topics and should be placed in the appropriate forum. The Member "Off Topic" forum is where our members can post almost anything, as long as it does not violate PersonalDefenseForum community standards. If you have comments or questions that are off topic or don't fit into any other forum, this is the place. Posts that get off topic in other threads may also be split and moved here or deleted. There is no appropriate place for off color jokes on this website. Off topic posts do not increment your post counter.
