Back in my high school bays a couple of other guys ran trap lines; we caught mostly musk rats and an occasional mink. Never knew mink fed on musk rats.

Minks aren't fussy about what they kill.

My grandmother kept an old fashioned piggy bank labeled "for my mink coat". She was always giving us grand-kids change from her piggy bank. I've kinda kept the concept going for my children and grandchildren.

That explains a lot that I never knew. Seems when we went fishing (grandfather and I ) different places, when we saw mink ..... you would not see muskrat around. When we saw muskrats, there was never any mink around. LOL I did wonder about that at the time, and he had no clue as to why it was like that either. He did always tell me, whatever you do .... DO NOT mess with the mink..... they could be vicious.... like any wild animal really. If you don't think that's true, run into a Opossum mother sometime..... with her babies around.
