Anyone got tips on good eats in Houston?

Mrs. Siam and I will be in Houston for a few days. We are looking for some good places to eat. We will be staying downtown (near the Toyota Center).

Has anyone ever been to the Hobbit Cafe?

I looked it up on line and it has a lot of reviews but very few really favorable ones.

Maybe if you tell people what you are looking for in the way of "eats" someone could make better recommendations.

I did not specify since we like all kinds of food.

There are three McCormick and Schmick's to choose from in Houston.

It is a chain, but at the high end.

If you like high-end deli food, Lenny & Ziggy's is awesome.

I also like Fadi's. They have a cafeteria style line. Some days they have lamb shanks that are awesome.

If you like seafood, try Captain Benny's. Shrimp and gumbo are my favorites.

    Pappasito's has real good fajitas.

I don't get downtown much, but... You're not far from a Pappa's BBQ (Anything Pappa's is pretty darn good!). To the north of the Hobbit Cafe is Grace's, which I have always heard good thing about, and to the south is Goode Company Seafood (anything Goode Company is also great) which is phenomenal! The original Ninfa's on Navigation (East of Toyato Center) is great TexMex also. But don't go much further east as that's gets into the not-so-polite areas of town.

Rice Village and Highland Village areas aren't far and have some great eclectic (Rice) and high end steak (Highland) restaurants.

Most of the good stuff if west of your location, but you don't have to get past the Hwy 610 loop for most of it.

PM me. I'm in the NW side but I'd enjoy shaking your hand and buying you and your wife lunch.

    Max

Back in the day, I was given some advice...

"Never eat at a place called Mom's; If the only other place in town is called Eats, eat at Mom's."

I'd forgotten about Alicias! Good call!

And if you want a steak, go to Taste of Texas out I-10 West.
