14.9mm SOP prototype rifle for extreme-range target shooting

    Here's something you don't see every day. A rifle with a bullet that's longer than a .30-06 cartridge, built on a necked-down 20mm casing.

    The 14.9 SOP: 5,400 Meters and Still Supersonic @ Guns.com, 27 June 2012.

    14.9mm SOP Rifle @ GearsOfGuns, 2 July 2012.

The gun's about as long as the early Volkswagen Beetle car. The bullet's 1690gr, 0.58 caliber, ballistic coefficient of 1.85. At the muzzle, it has ~3300fps and ~42K ft-lbs of force. It can reach out to 5400 meters (or, ~2.8mi). At 4000 meters, it's still got more than 8300 ft-lbs of force. At that distance, after 4000 meters the bullet will have dropped 4100 inches (or, 341 ft). As a prototype, it weighs in at 105 lbs.

Of course, you'll need to give Meade a call ... for one of their 8-inch telescopes. In order to see the bullet hole @ 5400 meters.

If it ever goes into production, even as a limited-production custom, folks are going to need a bigger range, for that thing. Along with a thicker butt-pad, bigger muzzle-brake, and a month's supply of ibuprofen, I suspect.

Not exactly what I would call a bush gun. I'm holding out for the necked-down 30mm model. 20mms are for wimps.

My question is, does one sight in at 25 or 50 yards?

As Col. Cooper so elegantly stated, if your hunting shot is over 300 yards, get closer!

My question is, can you really compensate for a bullet drop of 341 feet?
We must all hang together amigos, or we will all hang separately.

They're gonna have to dredge up the old tables from the Aberdeen Proving Ground, for that round.

And this sucker is a shoulder-fired weapon. I want to see that. On video, not in person.

Hopefully Wal Marts decision will backfire as did Dick’s decision to cease sales of guns and ammo. Note: Wal Mart has recently closed many stores because of declining sales and will close 269 stores around the world in the near future. I only shopped Wal Mart for ammo and fishing gear, guess i’ll now spend my money at Bass Pro Shop in the future.

Well, Wally-Mart isn't exactly a towering supplier for the 14.9mm rounds anyway. So ...

If you shop at the PSL Bass Pro, you'll have to give me a shout. It's like 5-10 minutes away.
