    Sika “deer” in Maryland

I was having predawn coffee waiting for Sunrise when a Sika walked through camp. A native of Japan/ Taiwan they stand 2.5 feet tall and less than 100lbs. They are a relative of Elk. They were brought here in the 1920s

We used to spend time in Maryland in the spring around Blackwater NWR and the Choptank River. Sika are handsome little deer.

Saw one that a hunter had taken and had mounted and the rack was pretty impressive when you accounted for the size of the deer it was on.

This guy was a spike it seems. He walked through completely oblivious of me.
