Diverting those millions of dollars from military construction may not have been such a wise move.

I know it was supposed to be a cost saving measure but the military should have never privatized housing.
    A 9MM MAY expand to .45 but a 45ACP will never shrink to 9MM.

At risk of preaching to the choir, those who risk (or have risked) their butts for the US of A (as well as their families) deserve the best we can do for them in return, not the least we can get away with doing.

They have been privatizing housing since at least 2004. This is not new. My experience is that it depends on location. When the military was in charge in sucked and when it was privatized it sucked.

Those housing units were built almost 15 years ago - they were finishing construction just as I retired, which was in 2005.
The privatized units have likely been very poorly maintained - and they were risky construction to begin with. MacDill is on a peninsula, surrounded by water, and these were built such that the living quarters are elevated above ground level, built up on stilts. A stiff wind like a good tropical storm and most of these will be blown over.
The construction was cheap stuff to begin with.

This has been a problem for a while. A Marine family in San Diego just won a $2 Million lawsuit for mold in their housing in San Deigo and another Marine family got $350,000 for the same thing in Norfolk.

The biggest problem we had with privatized housing was that the idiot civilian manager actually live on hour block. She "the office" sent out a letter saying that the kids could not play basketball in the street anymore because "someone" complained that they thought thier car would get damaged. Every person that lived there went to the housing office and found out it was the civilian manager that complained. Her house was about 5 houses away from the closest resident that had a basketball net.

15 families complained up the chain of command. Unfortunatley the Garrison commander was a civilian and did not give a crap about us.
