I have a Canon T-3i I am still learning to use, it replaced a Canon AE-1 I used for many years but has much more capability. All the manual settings are available through menus on the screen and it is a true SLR
    A 9MM MAY expand to .45 but a 45ACP will never shrink to 9MM.

Look into image stabilization features. Lens and or camera. Nice for long zooms or hand held shots in low light or like say when your on a boat for example. I like articulating rear displays but I use the viewfinder for the long zooms.
You'd probably be interested in how well the camera is sealed against the elements especially dust.
Bigger sensors equal more light and a lot is going on in the sensor business lately, so do some research there compared to megapixels

This is good advice. Research to get the most recent technology you can. Yes megapixels are good and the more the merrier but that sensor is what's doing the work of capturing light.

I read one time that the difference between the CCD sensor for astrophotography and a DSLR is :nothing. When they first started using CCD sensors for astrophotography they needed it to sensitive to light, equally, in each part of the CCD. So what they manufacturers did was select the sensors that had the "least" imperfections and sold them for use by astronomers.

It makes sense. How it is done now I really do not know.

I could look up a few of the old links I have saved and post them but they are way beyond the scope of this thread

BTW: I do have a Meade 10" reflector and dabble in astrophotography. Not very good at it LOL. I just do not have patience.

I never got into astrophotography but I do like the 6" tube reflector I have. Lots of fun up in N Georgia, out in the middle of nowhere
