One down, one to go.

I had my left knee replaced yesterday. The Doc said the damage was worse than the x-ray showed and no amount of bondo or buffing would have helped. The parts he ordered from the Steve Austin Body Parts Replacement mail-order catalog fit like they were made for me.

So far the drugs are keeping the pain at bay, but I'm hoping for a bourbon infusion soon. The right knee gets replaced Friday. I hope Austin didn't send two left knees. Having two left feet is bad enough.

Going to acute care for a week when released. They said that would be better with both knees done.

Both at once? Yikes! No personal experience, but I'm at an age where several friends have new knees. (Spoke with one at the gym this afternoon.) They all say rehab really helped.

I hope you have someone who can help with chores like fetching bourbon and addressing Christmas cards.

Hope you have a speedy recovery. But don't believe them when they say those who care for you will be cute. Big, mean nurses with nicknames like "Icepick" and "Knuckles" that make you bend ways you don't want to.

I had the snip and scrape on my left knee about 12 years ago from an old meniscus tear that was keeping me up at night and it's rearing up again. Next step is the replacement and I'm not eager to hobble down that road.

Well...the meds have started to wear off. So far two nurses have quit and joined the French Foreign Legion where things will be easier. My doc left and put on a gold robe and is standing out front, handing out paper flowers. I guess things are going well.

FWIW, they gave me Oxycodone for the pain. It made me feel like fire ants were crawling all over my body. I quit the stuff, because the pain felt better. I can't imagine how people get addicted to it!

I have taken oxycodone before and it had no effects on me. I seem to be oxy resistant.

I had it prescribed for pain, it helped me and I felt fine. I had the same feeling as maybe a single shot of alcohol. I can see how people get addicted to them, fortunately I didn't.

Two knees at once, eh? I suppose if you're gonna be down for awhile, it's probably reasonable to be down for both of them. From what I've heard, it's a tough few months of recovery, but well worth it. Of all the folks I know who've done either a hip or knee (or both), all but one have had serious improvements and got through without any noticeable limping. (And that "one," I suspect, failed to do all of his physical therapy, which would be just like him ... though, that's a guess.)


Treat the nurses and PT folks well, OldVet. And, if all goes well with the surgery and recovery, definitely add 'em all to the Christmas card list.

Do the therapy just like they tell you to do - no matter if it’s painful or boring.

I know one person who did the therapy and her knee is like brand new.

I know another person who was lazy about doing therapy and her knee is a mess now.
